Department Summary:

The vision of HSC is to create solutions for a healthier community through the implementation of a Whole Health Model. Our Department’s mission to realize this vision is driven, in part, by our areas of research strength and focus represented by Translational Research, Health Disparities Research, and Genetics/Genomics Research. Within the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Genetics, there are twenty-three full-time faculty and two adjunct faculty members with diverse research interests spanning molecular genetics, cellular immunology, microbiology, cancer health disparities. We are currently supported by more than $9 million in federal grant funding. We foster a highly collaborative and collegial environment where the faculty, trainees, and staff work together to advance innovative, cutting-edge scientific discovery related to human health.

The Department provides high-quality training for students interested in careers in biomedical research or medicine. The goals of our graduate program are (1) to provide a broad and sound education in microbiology, immunology, and genetics of human disease, and (2) to provide rigorous research training in an environment dedicated to advancing biomedical science. The Department has numerous trainees, including postdoctoral fellows, students earning DO/PhD, PhD, and MS degrees. The faculty and trainees in the Department are a cohesive group from diverse backgrounds, fostering scientific innovation, and discovery. We support graduate training programs in genetics, cell biology, immunology and microbiology, and biochemistry and cancer biology. Our faculty and trainees also take full advantage of the tremendous breadth of expertise and knowledge across UNTHSC.

Position Summary:

The recruit that fills this position will be expected to promote the mission and vision of HSC by pursuing, developing, and leading research, innovation, and discovery in translational genetics/genomics. Their research program should be synergistic with one or more of the HSC’s areas of research strength, which include translational research in health disparities, aging, and translational and precision medicine. Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
•teaching and mentoring of health professional and graduate students;
•advancing scholarship through a record of high-quality peer-reviewed funding and publications;
•collaborating within and outside the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences;
•supervising students, postdoctoral trainees, and technical staff undertaking research projects;
•participating in the activities of the Department;
•participating in UNTHSC-wide, as well as local, national, and international service activities; and
•maintaining a safe work environment, including ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal legislation.

Minimum Qualifications:

All candidates must have a PhD degree in genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, or allied discipline, with a minimum of two years of postdoctoral experience in molecular genetics, computational genetics, or bioinformatics.

The successful candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
•a track record of peer-reviewed publications;
•experience in teaching graduate and health professional students;
•strong background in translational genomics, transcriptomics, and/or epigenomics related to genetic traits that impact human health and/or healthcare; and
•excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• mentoring experience with graduate students at the PhD level;
• demonstration of potential success in obtaining extramurally-funded research;
• experience at the Assistant Professor level in an academic research environment;
• translational research experience in one or more of the following human health applications: aging, Alzheimer’s Disease (or related dementias), microbiome, health disparities; and
• management experience overseeing research lab staff-members.
