Department Summary:

The Missing Persons Unit (MPU) at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Center for Human Identification (UNTCHI) is an accredited forensic laboratory that specializes in the DNA analysis and anthropological identification of skeletal remains and other types of evidence for missing and unidentified persons cases for the purpose of assisting medical examiners and law enforcement in Texas and throughout the U.S. The laboratory utilizes autosomal STRs, mini-STRs, Y chromosomal STRs, and mitochondrial DNA. UNTCHI is a CODIS participating laboratory.

Position Overview:

Collect, identify, classify and analyze physical evidence related to criminal investigations. Perform tests on weapons or substances, such as fiber, hair and tissue to determine significance to investigation. May testify as expert witnesses on evidence or crime laboratory techniques. May serve as specialists in area of expertise, such as ballistics, fingerprinting, handwriting or biochemistry.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED and three (3) years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, forensic science, or related field.
• Three (3) years of forensic human DNA laboratory experience or other relevant laboratory experience.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with team and possess computer skills.

• Participate in performing equipment maintenance, performance checks, and calibrations


• Stock laboratories


• Trouble-shoot quality assurance and instrument problems


• Assist Forensic Analysts in completing cases
