  • Work hazards are associated with maintenance, utility service and powered and non-powered tools and equipment. Position involves exposure to hazards and some exposure to ventilation problems, noise extremes, inclement weather, and requires response to emergency facilities repairs as needed.
  • Employees of Facility Services are considered essential staff and must report to work when the university is closed for emergencies. This position is required to participate is on-call, call back duties and snow removal, which can include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Under established circumstances will respond to emergency dispatch calls within set timeframes Administrative or Residence Life buildings.
  • Travel between campus locations is a regular part of the position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive, on university business to pass an online defensive driving course and submit their driver's license number for periodic records review. The law affects all faculty, staff, and students who drive any university-owned motorized vehicles.

Job Description
Heavy Equipment Operator

    Position Summary

    The Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) works under the general direction of the Facility Services Landscape and Outdoor Services (LOS) Manager. The HEO guides Equipment Operators as they learn to operator heavy equipment. This classification is a skilled position and requires additional skill in equipment operation such as excavation near utilities. This is second in a series of two classifications. This position exists to aid and assist the LOS Manager in fulfilling the Facility Services' mission to the University by providing superior customer service to the Campus community, exercising fiscal responsibility, reporting on leading-edge technology and practicing sustainable maintenance and operations. This position operates heavy and other equipment as needed in support of university streets and landscaping maintenance programs.

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    (50%) EQUIPMENT OPERATION/ LANDSCAPING:

    • Performs street maintenance and grounds excavation work, often with blue stakes
    • Operates heavy equipment such as graders and bulldozers, and guides Equipment Operators when using heavy equipment.
    • Performs street maintenance and grounds excavation work.
    • Primary operator of camel drain cleaning truck which requires tanker endorsement
    • Operates equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, street sweepers, forklifts, snowplows, cinder spreaders, tractors, bobcats, man lifts, and boom, bucket, water, and dump trucks.
    • Operates lawnmowers, lawn sweepers, jackhammers, chain saws, trenchers, generators, compressors, tampers, rollers, cement saws, core drills, augers, and sandblaster; uses hand tools.
    • Operates riding & push mowers for daily lawn maintenance operations.
    • Performs turf maintenance and operates various turf maintenance mowers, spreaders, sweepers, tractors, bobcats, loaders and other equipment.
    • Transports and delivers materials. Installs and maintains signs and fencing.
    • This position will be responsible for concrete work, including new sidewalks and sidewalk repairs.
    • Must be a first responder on an on-call basis for snow removal on roads and parking lots using a dump truck plow and spreader.
    • Operates various snow removal equipment to clear snow from streets, walks and parking lots. Responsible for ice management. May also use snow blower attachment on a loader to remove snow piles from roads and parking lots.
    • Responsible for snow removal on sidewalks, stairs and ADA ramps as assigned.
    • Assists Fields Groundskeeper Lead in maintenance and repair of Athletic and Intramural fields.
    • Operates large power and field mowers, hand tools and large vehicles associated with grounds maintenance and landscaping activities.
    • May assist in trimming and pruning a variety of trees and shrubs, as required.
    • May shovel and remove snow and ice from designated areas such as steps, sidewalks and entryways as required.
    • Performs minor maintenance and repair of equipment and tools as required.
    • Responsible for completion of various landscaping projects assigned to them.
    • Assists Chemical Applicator by operating equipment for applying pesticides, and trapping pests such as gophers, cats, and skunks as needed.
    • Services and performs general and preventative maintenance on heavy equipment and all assigned related equipment.
    • Performs routine daily maintenance on all equipment. Includes washing/cleaning, checking and adding oil, and fluids.

    (25%) FIELD AND IRRIGATION SERVICE:

    • Assist irrigation and watering activities as required. Also may assist in other irrigation activities including installing or repairing heads, lines, valves, clocks, trouble shooting, mapping systems for both popup and drip systems.
    • May assist Irrigation Specialist, Senior in irrigation and watering activities as required. Also may assist in other irrigation activities including installing or repairing heads, lines, valves, clocks, troubleshooting, mapping systems for both popup and drip systems.

    (10%) CUSTOMER SERVICE AND ADMINISTRATIVE:

    • Provide superior customer service to the campus community.
    • Provides detailed, and accurate reports for work completed. Will involve daily work logs.
    • Maintains labor and cost records and requisitions materials, supplies and equipment as required.
    • Other items as assigned

    (10%) TRASH LITTER CONTROL:

    • Removes litter including cigarette butts and empties litter barrels.

    (5%) TRAINING/SAFETY AND OTHER:

    • Inspects work of assigned personnel and recommends corrective measures to meet established standards.
    • Provide training and assists in providing orientation to any assigned employees.
    • May assist Moving Department in the completion of moving furniture and event setups.
    • Participates in job-related training. May be required to attend out-of-town seminars.
    • May provide training and assist in providing orientation to any assigned employees.
    • Responsible for securing all equipment at the end of shift, removing tools and equipment from trucks and placing in proper storage. Locking all trucks and equipment.
    • May be required to work with other departments on projects.
    • May be required to work in the proximity to hazardous materials and is expected to work safely.

      Minimum Qualifications

      Equipment Operator

      • Two years of equipment operation experience; OR,
      • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
      • Possession of a current Arizona Type D driver’s license upon employment
      • Arizona Commercial Driver's License Arizona CDL required. Applicant will be required to obtain CDL permit within 30 days and a CDL license within 6 months.

      Heavy Equipment Operator

      • Three years of heavy equipment operation experience; OR,
      • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
      • Arizona Commercial Driver's License Arizona CDL required.
      • A pre-employment drug screening must be passed prior to incumbent beginning job functions. Incumbents in this position are subject to routine drug screening.

      Preferred Qualifications
      • CDL - Tanker endorsement for operation of our camel drain cleaning truck
      • EO 1-2 years of experience safely performing excavation work with bluestakes.
      • HEO 2+ years of experience safely performing excavation work with bluestakes.
      • Current Arizona Commercial Driver’s License Arizona CDL

      Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
      • Knowledge of equipment operation.

      Background Information

      Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check.

      Salary

      Commensurate with experience.

      **The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.


      FLSA Status

      This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.
