Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The primary duty is to conduct research projects in synthetic carbohydrate chemistry. A secondary duty is to co-supervise graduate students pursuing degrees in synthetic organic chemistry. The responsibilities include carrying out organic reactions aimed at achieving project goals on a regular and consistent basis, keeping the PI informed of project activities and progress, maintaining a complete and accessible laboratory notebook, participating in discussions relevant to the project, sharing laboratory resources responsibly with others working in the lab, assisting with the preparation of publications and presentations arising from the project, maintaining a clean and safe laboratory working environment. It is expected that the research associate will apply their background in organic chemistry and solid supported synthesis to new problems and developments in carbohydrate chemistry as the project demands.

Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. in organic chemistry and experience with oligosaccharide synthesis are required. The position requires the skills of designing and conducting multi-step organic syntheses, isolating and purifying the products of reactions using appropriate chromatographic separation methods, and determining the structure of the products using NMR spectral data. The ability to work safely and responsibly in a synthetic organic chemistry lab, to use standard methods of running organic reactions, to prepare and track samples, to identify literature relevant to the project, and to prepare scientific publications are required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with solid phase organic synthesis and with the laboratory automation technologies are preferred.

Salary

$18.00 per hour for 40 hours per week, with a possibility of up to 10% over-time, 44 hours per week maximum. This figure does not include fringe benefits.
