The Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development invites applications for a full-time faculty member with expertise in teacher education research at the Full Professor (with tenure) level. At BU Wheelock, we believe strongly that the cultural and social diversity of faculty, staff, and students is important to maintaining superior research and academic programs and creating a strong community. As such, we are seeking a faculty member who shares our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; the advancement of research to inform best practices; and the transformation of systems that impact learning and human development for a thriving, sustainable, and just future.

We seek a faculty member who is eager to lead system change efforts by developing a team of faculty colleagues and cultivating a research agenda focused on equity and innovation in teacher preparation and teacher support. Candidates must have a history of successfully obtaining external funding, conducting rigorous research, and producing excellent scholarship that is influential both within the academic literature and in the national and international discussions on teacher education. We are open to a broad range of research expertise within teacher education. However, the successful candidate’s research will advance knowledge on the relationship between teaching and learning across multiple domains. Additionally, the successful candidate will encourage the broad use of research methodologies to answer enduring questions about teaching and learning.

Boston University is an AAU institution with a rich tradition dedicated to inclusion and social justice. BU Wheelock includes equity, diversity, and belonging as one of its five strategic goals. We are dedicated to increasing the participation of all talented students and are committed to the pursuit of careers within education and human development by underrepresented groups at BU and beyond. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to provide leadership on the research and graduate studies in the Department of Teaching and Learning. Wheelock faculty teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses, advise students, and provide service to the university and the profession.

Applicants from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds in higher education are strongly encouraged to apply. As stated above, Boston University is committed to fostering a diverse university community within a supportive and respectful environment. We believe that the diversity of our faculty, students, and staff is essential to our success as a leading research university with a global reach, and that diversity is an integral component of institutional excellence.  In your application materials, we welcome a description of how, as a scholar, teacher, or community member, you will engage and sustain the commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion articulated in Boston University’s diversity statement.

The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
