Job Description Summary
The Medical Health Physicist C will provide physics support under a Broad Scope Medical License, several Medical and Non-Medical Accelerator Licenses, and an Irradiator License to the University of Pennsylvania including 150+ research Permits, a Veterinary School with a small and large animal Hospital, and a Dental School with research and clinical functions; the University Health System (including HUP, PCAM, Pennsylvania, Presbyterian, Chester County, Penn Medicine at Radnor, Penn Medicine at Cherry Hill), the Division of Community Radiology; Children's Hospital of Philadelphia; the Cyclotron Facility; and 30+ Ambulatory Care facilities.

Job Description

The Medical Health Physicist C will Assist user groups in developing and conducting procedures for the safe use of radiation sources and radioactive materials to assure staff and patient safety in the areas of Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, research associated with novel radio pharmaceutical drug production. Implement programs to ensure compliance with Federal, State and best practice guidelines including Joint Commission, American Board of Radiology, and Department of Health. Maintain radiation doses ALARA. Audit for compliance with regulatory and licensing requirements. Maintain strong working knowledge of applicable regulations and standards. Independently and routinely identify problem areas, analyze the issues and implement corrective actions. Plan, assign, supervise and evaluate the work of technical staff. Write and update SOPs and policies to maintain compliance. Work on unique and complex projects.

-Develop, implement and maintain Medical Health Physics programs for safe use of radioactive material and radiation producing devices under senior management direction. Reviews and incorporates government and industry radiation protection standards and requirements into the facility's programs to ensure ALARA. Recommends, designs, implements, and evaluates radiation research, training and monitoring programs, inspection standards, safe-work methods, decontamination procedures, and radiological emergency procedures.

-Provide Medical Health Physics services to Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Departments including general policies, procedure, quality assurance, shielding design, and regulatory compliance. Interact with clinical staff to ensure proper equipment function, maintain patient safety and quality assurance.

- Review qualification of research and clinical faculty requesting approval to function as Research Permit holders or Clinical Authorized Users and make recommendations to the Radiation Safety Committee. Review adequacy of education, experience and assure appropriate facilities, staff, instrumentation, and procedures are in place. Interact frequently with faculty during the licensing process.

-Prepare and maintain all correspondence and document pertaining to the University's Broad Scope Medical License, Accelerator Licenses, and Irradiator License. Keep informed of new requirements, interact frequently with regulatory agencies. Prepare and submit License revisions and amendments.

- Supervise and provide guidance to Medical Health Physicists and Medical Health Physics Technicians, conducting performance evaluation. Assign work to medical health physicists & health physics technicians. Assist with hiring process for new staff. May back up Director during his/her absence.

- Perform other duties as assigned


Ph.D. in Health Physics of equivalent related science with 5 years professional experience as a Medical Health Physicist in an Academic/Medical environment; or MA/MS in Health Physics or equivalent related science with 10 years of professional experience as a Health Physicist in in an Academic/Medical environment required. Board Certification by American Board of Health Physics, American Board of Radiology, or equivalent highly preferred.
