Deputy General Counsel

Job Summary  

As second highest legal administrator, assists the General Counsel in overseeing, planning, and directing department staff and work to support the Institute. Serves as trusted internal advisor to the General Counsel on matters handled by the Office of the General Counsel, including ethics, investigations, policies, communications, and program administration, in addition to various other legal matters affecting the Institute and its affiliates, including litigation, transactions, intellectual property, employment matters, athletics, campus operations issues, and risk management. Responsible for establishing group/departmental/division goals, determining the resources needed to meet those goals, assessing group/departmental/division performance feedback, and making pay decisions. This position will interact on a continuing basis with the: executive leadership, faculty, staff, students, University System of Georgia staff, external counsel, and external agencies. This position typically will advise and counsel: executive leadership. This position will typically supervise: Legal management and staff.

Responsibilities  

Job Duty 1 -
Serves as second highest legal position in the department, reporting directly to the General Counsel. Assists the General Counsel in managing the legal function of the organization.

Job Duty 2 -
Provide advice and counsel to various stakeholders on a variety of legal matters; work collaboratively on coordinated projects with overlapping areas of responsibility and expertise.

Job Duty 3 -
Oversee the development of both short and long-term plans and programs to promote awareness of the Institute's core values and policies.

Job Duty 4 -
Responsible for the day-to-day management of the Office of Ethics & Compliance, including training, communications, programs, policies, subject-matter areas, and investigations.

Job Duty 5 -
Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Office of Legal Affairs on all legal matters, in coordination with the General Counsel.

Job Duty 6 -
Manage internal professional development program for junior staff.

Job Duty 7 -
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications  

Educational Requirements
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school

Required Experience
Ten years of job related experience

Preferred Qualifications  

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Law firm, in-house, state government, or higher education institution experience; Member of the Georgia Bar or ability to become licensed as a member of the Georgia Bar within 12 months of hire

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities  

SKILLS
Direct experience in a leadership role relating to ethics and compliance issues and program management and/or legal department management. Demonstrated strategic leadership, planning and change management skills. Ability to lead and motivate others and earn the respect of employees at all levels. Highly effective written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Proven presentation experience and comfort with senior management audiences and effective facilitation skills with diverse groups. Excellent strategic skills to craft and help implement organizational strategies and plans for campus-wide initiatives. Exceptional interpersonal skills. Able to influence people, solve problems, trouble shoot, think creatively, and resolve conflicts. Significant experience in assessing legal and compliance risks in a large research university or other complex environment. Familiarity with the Federal Sentencing Guidelines criteria for effective compliance and ethics programs. Direct experience managing legal issues in decentralized organizational structure.
