Department Description:Dermatopathology at UNC provides diagnostic pathology service to the Department of Dermatology, UNC Hospitals, contract organizations, and to community dermatologists as outreach activities. This service involves receipt of patient tissue samples and handling these samples in a manner to produce stained slides for the generation of diagnostic reports. in November 2002, the laboratory received CAP (College of American Pathologists) accreditation and assumed the responsibility of tissue processing from McLendon Labs. This department is directly involved in the diagnosis and treatment of patients in the clinical areas served.

The Medical Lab Technologist (Histotechnologist) will assist in meeting the technical needs relative to current volume and projected growth within the laboratory. The technical needs are: case accessioning, gross examination of clinical specimens, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining of slides, coverslipping, case organization prior to interpretation by the pathologist, slide filing, block filing, performing species stains according to standard operating procedures, daily recording of preventative maintenance activity, performance of preventative maintenance, and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:The selected candidate must possess appropriate skill and knowledge in Histotechnology to carry out all procedures and processes according to
standard operating procedures for testing of patient samples. The selected candidate must be able to perform testing accurately according to standard
operating procedures. The ability to operate successfully in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with competing priorities is required.
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in medical technology, chemistry, or biological science with at least 1 year experience as a Histotechnologist or Histotechnician; or a combination of education, experience or ASCP certification as a Histotechnologist or Histotechnician. A four-year college degree is preferred with appropriate experience to sit for the ASCP certification as a Histotechnologist/Histotechnician.
