Department Description:

Applied Physical Sciences is the first new science department in the College of Arts and Sciences in nearly 40 years. Including the Chapel Hill Analytical and Nanofabrication Laboratory (CHANL), BeAM, a university-wide initiative to incorporate making into research, education, and entrepreneurship, and the graduate program in material sciences, Applied Physical Sciences is a dynamic and growing department, with nine full-time faculty members and plans to grow to 20 in the next several years.

Position Description:

The person in this position in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences will manage a portfolio of research projects for faculty in the department, staying abreast of, interpreting and communicating the policies and guidelines of funding agencies and the Office of Sponsored Research to ensure that submitted proposals are in compliance. The individual will inform investigators of grant proposal requirements and deadlines for each step, and notify them when renewal submissions or progress reports are due. This position independently drafts forms for proposals, budgets, progress reports, final reports, and extension requests. The position creates and routes electronic IPFs in RAMSeS, and reviews IPFs that were initiated in another department to ensure accuracy. This position is also responsible for extensive project management and post-award activities, including closeout reports, monthly reporting to PI, and personnel projections.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Excellent interpersonal skills and judgment are essential, including the ability to work closely with investigators to make edits to proposals prior to submission. The individual must be highly organized in order to keep track of numerous projects currently in process and in order to locate previously submitted project files quickly. Excellent attention to detail is required to ensure that proposals are accurate, properly formatted, and in compliance with funding agency guidelines. Excellent writing skills are required to compose grant-related correspondence to OSR and funding agencies. The ability to independently research questions and issues that arise to determine the appropriate response or action is required. The individual will have the ability to communicate effectively and in a courteous, helpful manner with faculty, staff, students, and other university or agency offices. Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, and Outlook is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include knowledge of grants administration fundamentals, including familiarity with OMB Uniform Guidance and understanding of standard federal award mechanisms, terms and conditions; experience with post award administration; and working knowledge of accounting software or UNC financial systems such as Connect Carolina, RAMSeS, InfoPorte, Cayuse, & eCRT.
