Organizational Unit Overview:

It is the mission of the Department of Pediatrics, East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine to provide exemplary medical education/training of physicians in pediatric medicine at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, it is the mission of the department to provide model comprehensive primary and consultative subspecialty care to children of eastern North Carolina, to advance scientific knowledge through basic and clinical research, and to provide continuing medical education opportunities for physicians in the region.

Job Duties :

The Department of Pediatrics at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University, is seeking a full-time board eligible/board certified pediatric intensivist to join five full-time pediatric intensivists in staffing a 12-bed multidisciplinary PICU and help augment a rapidly expanding pediatric sedation service, currently staffed by one full-time critical care physician. In addition to critical medical care, this position is heavily involved in teaching. Pediatric, Internal Medicine-Pediatric, and Emergency Medicine residents participate in learning and inpatient care in the PICU and on the sedation service on a rotating basis. Five PICU trained acute care pediatric nurse practitioners help staff the PICU and provide pediatric sedation. Annual PICU admissions are 700 – 800 and are rising; the sedation services provides sedation to over 1200 outpatient and inpatient encounters per year. An interest in teaching, clinical research, and pediatric sedation is desirable.

The PICU is an integral part of a rapidly growing Children’s Hospital which is part of a Level 1 Trauma Center with a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department. The Maynard Children’s Hospital includes a day medical and sedation center as well as a pediatric hematology/oncology unit and a 21 bed special care nursery.

The PICU both supports and is supported by a broad range of sub-specialty medical and surgical services, including but not limited to pediatric surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, and pediatric anesthesia.

The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center, which is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health Systems and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Minimum Education/Experience :

MD or DO required with board certification in Pediatrics and board eligibility/board certified in Pediatric Critical Care.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :

North Carolina Medical License
Board Certified in Pediatrics, board eligible or board certified in Pediatric Critical Care.
