Primary Function:

The Research Associate’s primary function includes conducting historical research pertinent to the Roberson Project, publishing that research in appropriate forums (including online), and providing administrative and social media support to further the mission of the Roberson Project on Sewanee’s campus and beyond.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with team of scholars who are conducting archival and other historical research on and off campus;
  • Disseminate research in online forums (blog, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) and, where pertinent, in professional outlets;
  • Provide administrative support to Project director in organizing programming and other public events;
  • Act as advisor to College and Seminary student groups affiliated with the Project;
  • Train summer undergraduate and graduate assistants in research methods and oversee their work;
  • Supervise work study students during academic year;
  • Act as public ambassador of the Roberson Project in meetings with alumni and members of Sewanee community.
  • Work closely with Project director in maintaining website and social media outlets;
  • Developing and maintaining communications networks, including quarterly newsletters.

Judgment Required:

Performance of the essential duties of this position is dependent upon independent ingenuity and developmental efforts.

Education:

PhD, preferably in field related to African American history or studies. Completion of degree no more than five years prior to position start date; requirements for degree must be completed by time of starting job; degree awarded by Sept. 1, 2021.

Experience:

Experience in history-based archival research.

Supervision Received:

This position receives general supervision. Broad instructions are provided and the staff member uses judgment and experience to carry out assignments. Completed assignments and finished products are reviewed by supervisor after completion.
