The Department of Surgery is currently seeking a Sr. Dental Assistant. The incumbent in this position performs a variety of technical duties to assist dentist in the examination and treatment of patients. Screens patients for dental ailments. Assists in the dental treatment of patients to include seating patients, providing dentist with instruments and equipment, and mixing filling an impression materials; chart examination and treatment results on patient’s dental records. Explains procedure to patient being rendered and subsequent treatments needed. Records patient’s medical history and chief complaints.

Sets up for dental procedures according to patients’ treatment. Assists dentist at chair side during procedures by performing a variety of technical duties.

Records treatment results on patient’s dental record; instruct patients in the care of teeth and appliances; provide instructional material as required. Cleans sterilizes and assemble instruments, supplies and equipment required for specific dental procedures. Schedule and confirm appoints, process dental records as required; Performs routine maintenance on instruments and equipment. Requisition supplies and equipment as needed. Assist the dentist directly at chair side with operative, oral surgery, orthodontic and a wide range or other procedures. Perform laboratory functions such as pouring and trimming models, constructing custom trays and fabricating temporary crowns and bridges. Maintain inventory of medications and controlled substances for use in oral surgery. Knowledge of use of retractions to increase visibility during surgical procedures. Keep a log of all prosthetic cases. Exposing digital, panorex and cone beam x-rays

Exposing and developing dental x-rays. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge and the principles, practices and procedures of general dentistry and/or oral surgery as applied to assisting a dentist in the treatment and care of patients. Knowledge of the types of instruments and materials used in the practice of general dentistry and oral surgery. Ability to follow oral and written direction of a professional person in exact detail. Ability to deal with patient with empathy and respect. Effective verbal and written communication skills along with proper telephone etiquette. Performs in tactful and professional manner.. Knowledge of various software used in the dental practice: Dental I-Cat, SCHICK, Dimaxis, Patterson

Education Requirements (Essential Requirements):

High school or equivalent

Certificate in Dental Assisting

Certified in Expanded Duties

Dental Radiographer License

Work Experience Requirements (Essential Requirements):

Minimum five (5) years’ experience in dental assisting
