Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Director of Nursing is responsible for the administration of the LVN, ADN, and ADN Transition programs.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise and evaluate nursing faculty.
  • Recruit, hire, and train new faculty.
  • Provide academic leadership to faculty, students, and the institution that supports active teaching and learning among students and faculty.
  • Provide leadership in planning and administration of the Nursing program.
  • Develop and execute plans to revise the nursing curricula to meet the requirements and expectations of the Next Generation NCLEX Project.
  • Evaluate, and continuously improve the Nursing curricula.
  • Develop and maintain contractual arrangements with clinical facilities.
  • Facilitate compliance with external regulatory agencies (i.e., The Texas Board of Nursing).
  • Write periodic state, national, and institutional reports.
  • Represent the College in a positive manner to employees, students, visitors, and the general public.
  • Participate in the Nursing Advisory Committees.
  • Collaborate with Nursing faculty to develop, implement, and coordinate the Nursing program admission policies and procedures.
  • Assist in marketing the Nursing program.
  • Support recruitment and advisement of Nursing students, including student success planning.
  • Consult with the Registrar in the review and approval of transfer credits.
  • Supervise the orientation processes for incoming Nursing students.
  • Serve as the contact for Nursing student complaint resolution and/or grievances.
  • Verify students' completion of program requirements and submit the affidavit of graduation to the Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Nursing and Allied Health in the preparation of the annual Nursing budget and monitor expenditures throughout the year.
  • Purchase and maintain equipment to meet student learning needs.
  • Develop class and room utilization schedules in collaboration with Nursing faculty, College administration, and support staff.
  • Promote department compliance with all College policies.
  • Participate in Instructional Council and other voluntary and assigned college committees.
  • Work cooperatively with the Center of Workforce and Continuing Education programming to ensure service to the needs of community health organizations.
  • Maintain currency in Nursing by participating in professional development activities, to include attendance at state and national regulatory agency meetings.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and some weekends.
  • Teach no more that three (3) clock hours per week.


Additional duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s (or higher) degree in Nursing
  • Must hold an unencumbered current license or privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas
  • Two (2) years of teaching experience in a professional nursing educational program
  • Three (3) years of work experience as a licensed nurse
  • Experience with budgeting, departmental evaluation, and management of faulty and personnel
  • Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum development, instructional methodologies, and clinical nursing practice
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Next Generation NCLEX Project
  • Experience working effectively in teams across multiple areas of an organization
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty and staff
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse populations
  • Possess a working knowledge of computers and educational technology
  • Leadership skills related to ACEN accreditation skills
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in both vocational and associate degree nursing programs
  • Previous experience as a coordinator/director of nursing in the State of Texas
  • Previous experience teaching in a nursing program in a community college
  • Demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of policies to ensure equity in educational programs
  • Demonstrated experience supervising faculty, building effective teams, and managing conflict
