The PAIR Center Communications and Engagement Manager will be responsible for planning and executing the communications and engagement strategies for the Center. The Center's Engagement Strategy is designed to integrate patients, caregivers, and community organizations in our work to ensure that our research priorities and messaging are meaningful to the populations we hope will benefit most from our work - patients and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds who are impacted by serious illness. He or she will manage all engagement activities related to an $11 million smoking cessation study funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) among underserved patients (Black, Hispanic, low socio-economic status, or rural). This involves working closely with an established Stakeholder Advisory Group of healthcare system leaders, payers, policy makers, community organizations, and patients and families. He/she will also foster relationships with community and national organizations that work with seriously ill patients and their families as well as individual patients and caregivers involved in the PAIR Center's work, and help to steer engagement activities recommended by the PAIR-CHIBE Committee for Anti-Racism and Social Change. He or she will plan and attend community events and advisory councils as needed (virtually during the COVID pandemic).
The Communications and Engagement Manager will work with the Director of Research Operations to develop content and communications associated with two pilot programs: the Penn Roybal Center on Palliative Care in Dementia and the “Pitch An Idea for Research with the PAIR Center” (PAIR with PAIR) program. This involves attending Steering Committee and Advisory Board meetings; developing and releasing requests for proposals for the Center's pilot programs; corresponding with the National Institute on Aging Coordinating Center; and assisting to plan an annual symposium with investigators and thought leaders from across the nation.
He/she will establish and manage relationships with other communication professionals at Penn Medicine as well as the local media to leverage the PAIR Center's work. He or she will develop strategies to promote and disseminate the PAIR Center's work, faculty achievements, and events via traditional and social media with the goal of ensuring the Center's work has the greatest impact. Stakeholders who are the intended targets of PAIR Center communications include other academic researchers, large healthcare system leaders, payers, policy makers, community organizations, and advocacy groups. PAIR Center's Communications strategies including, but not limited to, the annual report, the PAIR Center website, and special media engagements. He or she will be responsible for generating content for the PAIR Center website and social media accounts as well as print materials.
The Communications and Engagement Manager will report regularly to and seek guidance from the PAIR Center Director and the Director for Research Operations but will function independently in carrying out most responsibilities. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrable engagement experience and strong writing skills.
QUALIFICATIONS: (Qualifications should clearly indicate those that are required and those that are preferred.)
- Experience developing and implementing engagement strategies and experience interfacing with diverse stakeholders (e.g., patients, families, or community organizations) - required.
- Bachelor's Degree and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required- Master's Degree preferred.
- Demonstrated strong writing and editing skills - required;
- Experience working in communications, preferably in a health care setting - preferred.
- Experience interfacing and directing graphic designers- preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with team members, other University employees on an interpersonal level, both verbally and in writing;
- Responsive service orientation -- positive, "can do" approach to initiatives, problems, and solutions;
- Excellent organizational skills -- able to prioritize work and manage time;
- Strong team orientation with the ability to be flexible with time and independently manage multiple priorities simultaneously;
- Proficiency with website design and “push” vehicles, such as Twitter and Linkedin;
- Position contingent upon funding.
