Overview
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) seeks to fill an engineering or physics position to perform systems analysis and design for magnetic fusion pilot plants. The focus of the design study is to identify the impact of different engineering, technology and physics innovations on optimal design point and relative cost by performing trade studies. These studies will require developing and applying a broad understanding of the design of a pilot plant including the machine core, magnet systems, materials, tritium breeding blankets, auxiliary heating systems, balance of plant and remote maintenance. Nuclear safety & licensing issues should also be considered. The key tasks addressed by this position include: updating current systems codes to incorporate more realistic representations of the proposed innovations (superconducting magnet designs, divertor/plasma exhaust concepts, breeder-blanket concepts, etc...), and identify potential optimal design point solutions for fusion pilot plants. The candidate will also ensure additional engineering analysis is completed to validate key assumptions and sensitivities of the targeted design points. The candidate will work regularly with others to incorporate the various models and updated costing algorithms into the analysis, and to complete or coordinate the engineering analysis.
Responsibilities
- Update engineering and physics models in systems codes (30%)
- Incorporate costing analysis in systems codes (5%)
- Identify fusion pilot plant design points (35%)
- Complete or coordinate engineering analysis to test assumptions and sensitivities (30%)
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- BS in Engineering + 5 years experience, or Ph.D. in Engineering or Physics
- Experience with systems analysis and nonlinear optimization; Experience with programming languages (Fortran, Matlab/IDL/python);
