Professional Research Assistant - Laboratory Manager

The Colorado Program for Skeletal Research group within the Department of Orthopedics is seeking an experienced, full time Professional Research Assistant (PRA) to serve as laboratory manager.  Responsibilities will include the management of projects aimed at understanding musculoskeletal biology in homeostasis and disease.  Colonies of rare genetically diverse wild strains of mice, application of state-of-the-art imaging, genetics and molecular methods to study bone, cartilage and other tissues of the skeletal system. 
 

 Examples of Work Performed

  • Mouse husbandry, management of breeding/genotyping, orthopedic surgery, skeletal tissue harvest.
  • Collection of skeletal imaging information from live mice and harvested tissue samples
  • Isolation and purification of protein and nucleic acid from harvested tissues from mice and humans
  • Molecular analyses of mouse and human tissues, including Western blotting, qPCR/PCR, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence
  • Microbiology work in the context of gut microbiome

QualificationsKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of skeletal system biology and genetics
  • Ability to work both in a team environment and independently
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Basic computer skills in both Mac and PC environments
  • Bioinformatics expertise would be a plus
Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
  • Substitution: A minimum of 3 years of research related experience

Applicants mustmeet minimum qualifications at the time of hire. 


Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience working with animal models of disease
  • Experience performing surgical and sample collection methods in live mice, including skeletal fracture, knee joint injury, gavage, blood sampling, fecal sampling, tail vein injection and injection
  • Experience performing tissue, protein and nucleic acid isolation and analyses
