Job Description:

This laboratory technician position supports Dr. Matthew LaVoie laboratory in the Department of Neurology performing a variety of routine laboratory experiments, statistical analysis and general lab support.

Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine laboratory tests following established methodologies. Routine tests may include SDS-PAGE, Western blotting and various modes of microscopy. Prepares and maintains tissue cultures including stem cells and differentiation of those into neurons, astrocytes, and other terminal cell fates. Basic animal husbandry and maintenance may also be required.

Records data, summarizes, and analyzes using basic statistics. Records data into lab notebooks and electronic archives as direct by the PI. These forms of data will include images captured under various modes of microscopy, physical film and/or images of Western blots. Pooled data will be stored in a data management software (Graphed Prism, or similar) where summative data and routine statistical analysis (t-test, ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, etc.) can be calculated.

Maintenance of laboratory equipment, reagent preparation, proper disposal of chemicals/ biological material, cleaning glassware, overall general maintenance. Maintains supplies in accordance with departmental procedures (organizes and oversees ordering of general lab supplies)

Other duties as assigned.

Expected Salary:

$15 - $16.50

Minimum Requirements:

Associate's degree in an appropriate area and two years of related experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Good organizational skills; detail oriented

Sound degree of computer literacy
Ability to methodically record data and to analyze data using basic statistics
Ability to perform a variety of routine tasks and prioritize work
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to demonstrate professionalism
