Job Title:College Success Coordinator (Upward Bound Grant)Job Summary:

The Upward Bound College Success Coordinator reports to the Program Director and is responsible for implementing case management services and retention initiatives that foster a growth mindset, help improve academic performance, and prepare Upward Bound participants for post-secondary opportunities. Chief among the responsibilities is to provide direct service during their senior year to increase their college and career options and help develop their post secondary education plan.

Duties/Physical Demands:

Serving as the lead advisor for Upward Bound seniors including:
● Taking the lead on making sure college-bound students are on-track to graduate
● Registering college-bound students for necessary college admissions exams
● Developing a post-secondary education plan for each college-bound participant
● Exposing students to post-secondary education by arranging college visits, guest speakers, and organizing our annual college and career fair visits.
● Helping students understand the critical issues with navigating the college experience
● Providing individualized guidance through the college selection, application, and enrollment processes
● Working with students and families to complete financial aid and scholarship applications to secure college funding and troubleshoot the financial-aid process
● Developing relationships with students’ families
● Introducing students to key university staff/departments such as academic advisors, financial aid representatives, and residence life director
● Connecting students to university resources such as TRIO/SSS, academic advising and counseling centers
● Monitoring alumni academic progress by communicating with students regularly via email/social media, telephone, and in-person (monthly)
● Enrolling and monitoring selective scholars with credentials in online college course(s).
● Developing relationships with a small cadre of colleges and universities to help increase rate of success for scholars’ transition.
● Assist the program staff with the planning and implementation of Saturday Academy activities by coordinating monthly programming to improve students’ academic performance and help increase their intrinsic motivation
● Assist the Program Director in developing partnerships that supports matriculation and retention of Upward Bound students
● Participate in scheduled planning sessions to develop key tools and strategies that promote the departments work

Minimum Qualifications:

• A bachelor’s degree in psychology, counseling, education, student affairs or related field is required. Education and knowledge/experience can be earned concurrently.
• Ability to plan and implement curriculum based on program objectives and the needs and abilities of students
• Knowledge of college and career readiness and retention practices, college selection, application, and enrollment process, and federal and local financial aid programs.
• Experience providing counseling/advising at a college or university or case management experience
• An understanding of employment trends and the connection between college majors and job outlook/potential earnings
• Excellent time management and organizational skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including writing skills.
• Effectively handle multiple demands and competing deadlines.
• The ability to take responsibility for one’s own performance.
• Possess an unrelenting belief that all students can achieve and succeed.


This position is available to persons who are currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time and indefinite basis. (Persons authorized to work on such a basis include US citizens, lawful permanent residents (“green card” holders), asylees, refugees, and temporary residents under IRCA.)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community. Candidates should possess a high degree of integrity in handling confidential information; and a strong attention to detail.
Be proficient in the use of computer technology to support department activities, e.g. Colleague, selected Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), social media engagement and other related software.
