The Division of Student Affairs at San Jose State University is taking a curricular approach to the delivery of co-curricular programs and services. This approach will be grounded in a defined Student Affairs Curriculum, an embedded commitment to racial justice and equity, and a continuous assessment of educational and operational effectiveness. This requires a new role in the Division that will ensure that the fundamental work of Student Affairs is executed to address learning and engagement principles, and will be done in new ways to meet the dynamic and diverse needs of all demographics of students. The Director will report to the Vice President of Student Affairs with a dotted line to the Director of Institutional Research. This role is designed to center equity and racial justice within the co-curriculum and the assessment of the co-curriculum. The Director will bring a new intentionality to the content of Student Affairs work, the efficacy of engagement strategies, and ensuring that historically underrepresented students and experiences are made core subjects of programs, services, and policies. This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.
- Develop and implement a divisional programming and frameworks based on concepts from Bensimon’s Equity Scorecard Framework (assessing access, retention, excellence, and institutional receptivity) and the Jackson and Holvino’s Multicultural Organization Development Model
- Establish division-wide assessment strategy based on learning outcomes, operational effectiveness, and compliance with regional and specialized accreditation standards
- Collaborate with Cultural Centers and other units to develop and measure the efficacy of student success programming targeting at underrepresented students
- Partner with division units to conduct periodic assessment of equity metrics in Student Affairs policies and procedures
- Partner with University Personnel to consider the equity and racial justice issues in Student Affairs workplace environments
- Converge, report, share, and analyze data assessment data
- Train departments on assessment processes and tools
- Identify theories of change and a logic model to drive assessment
- Train Student Affairs departments on curriculum standards
- Support Student Affairs anti-racism leadership development
- Lead and manage the Student Affairs Curriculum guiding requisite annual programming and services
- Develop and stewardship of a racial justice and equity template for all Division programs and services
- Development of strategy-based racial justice initiatives within the Division and in partnership with non-Student Affairs areas
- Develop co-curricular design and delivery standards
- Manage the development, implementation and continuous evolution of Student Affairs education and training programs
- Partner with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs units to co-lead educational activities designed to address retention and completion outcomes for specific student populations
- Collaborate with the Office of the President, Office of the Provost, and Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to implement and achieve university-wide racial justice goals
- Working collaboratively with Student Affairs, Administration, Finance and University Personnel; conduct ongoing engagement, education and training and workplace assessments for staff across the Division
- Serve on a committee promoting inclusion and racial justice
- Understand the history of racism and the impacts of institutional and structural racism
- Leverage assessment results to identify gaps in organization, services, and educational programming
- Collaborate with Division and SJSU leadership to launch strategic efforts to close gaps
- Train staff on equity lens and skills

- Bachelor’s Degree
- Three years of work experience with some combination of these areas: assessment, co-curricular development, and racial justice
- Master’s or PhD Degree
- 5 years of experience in a higher education or related setting and leading programs that build co-curricular programming
- Experience in developing, implementing, and leading Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) programs, with demonstrable outcome
- Experience in development assessment programs and/or providing training to others on the topic of assessment
- Published work or conference presentations on the topics of racial justice, assessment and/or co-curricular development
