Departmental Overview

The Department of Molecular & Cell Biology (MCB) is home to undergraduate and graduate academic programs as well as Faculty Research performed by faculty organized in five divisions:
  • Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology
  • Cell and Developmental Biology
  • Genetics, Genomics and Development
  • Immunology and Pathogenesis
  • Neurobiology

The teaching and research activities of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) concern the molecular structures and processes of cellular life and their roles in the function, reproduction, and development of living organisms. This agenda covers a broad range of specialized disciplines, including biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, structural biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, tumor biology, microbiology, immunology, pathogenesis and neurobiology. The types of living organisms from which the departmental faculty draws its working materials are as diverse as its disciplinary specializations, ranging from viruses and microbes through plants, roundworms, annelids, arthropods, and mollusks to fish, amphibia, and mammals. The faculty of the department is organized into five divisions: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Cell and Developmental Biology; Genetics, Genomics and Development; Neurobiology; and Immunology and Pathogenesis.

Responsibilities

Lab Management:
  • Safety officer, manage purchasing, ordering supplies and repairs, organize and manage lab reagents.
  • Manage lab calendar and assign/schedule lab duties, autoclave waste, assist with animal protocol renewals and safety inspection.
  • Provide administrative support, logging data into lab spreadsheets, grant proposal preparation, research paper preparation, seminar scheduling, mail processing and general correspondence, and filling out standard UC forms (e.g. reimbursement forms, chemical inventories, safety checklists; manage supervisor's calendar; research and place orders for equipment and supplies; assist with PowerPoint presentation; preparations and posters; review financial statements).
  • Manage the lab's mouse colony, including isolation of genomic DNA and genotyping cells by PCR. To do this the Lab Manager will learn how to set up breeding's, weaning's, and euthanizing mice. This genotyping will require daily record keeping in laboratory notebook.
  • Standard molecular biology techniques.
  • The Lab Manager will assist lab members with their experiments in molecular biology.
  • The Lab Manager will perform immunohistochemistry, PCR, cloning, standard cell cultures and make these available to the lab members.
  • In addition, the Lab Manager will assist members of the lab with genotyping of their mouse colonies.
  • The Lab Manager will be required to attend weekly lab meetings to understand the basic objectives of the lab's research projects.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience with mouse handling, molecular biology techniques, and knowledge of lab safety procedures.
  • Proven organizational and leadership skills to be able to work independently.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills that create and maintain excellent working relationships in a team environment.
  • The capability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Broad understanding of equipment and technologies used in Neuroscience research.
  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, or related field and at least 2 years of extensive experience working in a biology research lab and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience managing multiple projects in a supervisory/managerial role for a minimum of two years in a corporate or academic setting.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
