The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department invites applications for a tenure-track assistant-professor position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2021. We seek an individual who will strengthen our research and educational programs in the area of thermal sciences. Research areas of interest include but are not limited to energy and thermal science/engineering, alternative energy systems, combustion, thermal transport across multiple length and time scales, and multidisciplinary thermal-system design. Candidates should be capable of teaching core thermodynamics, heat transfer, and transport courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The position will be at the Assistant Professor rank. Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent degree from an accredited university in a relevant science or engineering discipline. The successful candidate should maintain a strong publication record, develop a vigorous externally funded research program, recruit and supervise graduate students, provide outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including core and specialized courses in the thermal sciences, and contribute their leadership, as well as collaborative and innovative approaches in an increasingly successful thermal sciences program within the department and the university and to the engineering profession.

Successful candidates will also be expected to contribute towards increasing the number and quality of students, including members of underrepresented groups, pursuing graduate degrees in thermal sciences and related programs. Information about the Department is given at the website: http://engineering.uci.edu/dept/mae.

Applications should include a cover letter; a description of research, teaching, and service interests, including ability to contribute to departmental and interdisciplinary programs; a curriculum vitae; a separate statement that addresses past, current, and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion; the names and contact information of at least four references; and the Authorization to Release Information (*). References will not be contacted until a later stage of consideration, after consultation with the candidate.

UCI is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), is ranked as a top ten public university by U.S. News and World Report, and was identified by the New York Times as No. 1 among U.S. universities that do the most for low-income students. UCI is located in Orange County, 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 45 miles south of Los Angeles. Irvine is one of the safest communities in the U.S. and offers a very pleasant year-round climate, numerous recreational and cultural opportunities, and one of the highest-ranked public school systems in the nation.

(*) The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UC Irvine conducts institutional reference checks for candidate finalists to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer of appointment into Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full). The institutional reference checks involve contacting the administration of the applicant's previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University's Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Irvine requires all candidates of Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into AP RECRUIT as part of their application. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) positions will be subject to institutional reference checks.

The university is also addressing the needs of the community and growing world population in an environmentally sustainable way. From the development of new and reliable processes for electricity and alternative fuels to critical water and waste management solutions, UCI consistently tops the list in Sierra magazine’s “Coolest Schools” report, its annual sustainability ranking of U.S. colleges and universities.

A hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, the university collaborates with the community on many strategic partnerships such as UCI Applied Innovation , a center which brings campus-based discoveries together with Orange County’s vibrant business sector to support job creation and economic growth. Development also continues on the 185-acre University Research Park adjacent to campus, where R&D companies enjoy collaborative opportunities in medical research, biotechnology, engineering, computer science and business.

UCI is benefiting the community and the world in countless ways through its scholarly, scientific, creative and economic contributions. On its way to becoming a flagship UC campus and one of the nation’s very best universities, UCI has embarked on a strategic plan that will ensure the campus continues to inspire excellence as it fulfills its research, teaching and public service missions in the decades ahead.
