Dean of the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation

The University of Maryland (UMD) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

UMD is a public research university located in College Park, Maryland. Founded in 1856, UMD is the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland. The University ranks within the top 25 public institutions in the country by U.S. News and World Report and has been a member of the Association of American Universities since 1969. A member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance and Conference, UMD enrolls more than 30,000 undergraduates and more than 11,000 graduate students, participating in more than 90 bachelor’s programs and over 100 graduate programs within its 12 colleges and schools.

The University of Maryland’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (MAPP) offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees within four disciplinary programs: architecture, historic preservation, urban studies and planning, and real estate development. The School's mission is to educate architects, planners, preservationists, real estate developers and the many allied stakeholders whose work and scholarship focus on improving the quality of the built environment and promoting social justice, cultural value, resource conservation and economic opportunity. MAPP is also a national leader in interdisciplinary graduate degrees, offering fifteen dual degree programs within the school and across the University of Maryland campus. MAPP is also home for the National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education, The Environmental Finance Center, and the Colvin Institute of Real Estate Development.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Provost, the Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and is responsible for the strategic, operational, and financial direction for the School.  The Dean will provide leadership and vision for the School; continue to encourage effective collaborative relationships; articulate with enthusiasm the School’s mission to students, faculty, staff, alumni, public agencies, and potential funders; and foster an environment of excellence in teaching and learning.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced and collaborative leader who is dedicated to the built environment and its relationship to solving cultural, ethical, economic, and environmental challenges. Leveraging an interdisciplinary lens, the next dean will build on and continue to develop a purposeful and compelling strategy that will continue to distinguish MAPP as a relevant and valuable regional, national, and international resource. The successful leader must demonstrate vision, creativity, and resourcefulness. It is essential that competitive candidates bring a demonstrated track record for public commitment and successful action on diversity, inclusion, equality, and anti-racism.

As a key member of the University’s leadership, the next Dean must have the ability to work across disciplinary boundaries inside and outside of the school. They will bring a strong commitment to recruitment, retention, and placement of a diverse group of students, as well as the recruitment and retention of a diverse group of faculty and staff. The successful candidate will have a distinguished record of academic accomplishments, scholarship, or professional experience appropriate for appointment at the rank of Full Professor in the School.

Applications and nominations will be accepted until the position is filled, but interested parties are encouraged to submit a letter of interest and curriculum vitae as soon as possible via e-mail to Korn Ferry:
