The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is comprised of physical, natural and social scientists from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds. Our mission is to create, extend and disseminate applied and theoretical scientific knowledge of the Earth’s physical, natural and human systems and their interactions through scholarly research, teaching and service. This is accomplished through the lens of five interdisciplinary themes: Global Change, Sustainability, Human Environmental Interaction, Hazards, and Geospatial Perspectives.

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences advances the discovery, dissemination, and application of knowledge and creativity and – by building the academic programs for tomorrow – educates students to be critical and imaginative thinkers and engaged citizens for a world increasingly characterized by diversity and change.

Description of Work:

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Urban and Community Planning. We are seeking a dynamic and broadly trained planner with expertise in the built environment, urban development, social justice, community resilience, human-environment relationships, and/or socio-ecological systems. This position will begin August 12, 2021.

In an effort to bridge urban and environmental strengths across the Department and in support of a social justice initiative across the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, this position is one of two hires contributing to our Department’s urban planning programs.

Requirements for this position include a Ph.D. degree in Geography, Planning or a related field, in hand by the time of appointment, evidence of scholarly productivity, ability to secure appropriate external funding, and potential for engaging students in a diverse academic environment. The candidate should also show evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Candidates should demonstrate the ability to contribute to the department’s undergraduate and graduate curriculum, build a successful, cutting-edge research program, and develop coursework in their area of expertise. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for all students, along with an interest in promoting diversity in their research, teaching, and service. The teaching load for new faculty is two courses per semester in the pre-tenure period.

Minimum Experience/Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

Geographic and topical areas of research are open, with preference given to individuals who will complement one or more methodological areas of expertise in our department such as community-engaged action research, community mapping, mixed-methods, and/or qualitative methods.
