The Digital Researcher/Senior Research Associate position is located within the Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism (CTEC) on the campus of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. The Digital Researcher/Senior Research Associate will work on the technical implementation and management of CTEC’s flagship online extremism project.Essential Functions:
Carry out technical maintenance, development, and qualitative and quantitative analysis for CTEC’s online extremism initiative.
Oversees methodological direction and design in partnership with Senior Project Manager/Research Associate.
With Senior Project Manager/Research Associate, responsible for quality assurance on all project research, deliverables, and related open-source publications.
Provides visualizations and other platforms to assist the work of student researchers and CTEC’s Senior Project Manager/Research Associate.
Develops long-term plan for improving and evolving the project’s technology.
Assists Senior Project Manager/Research Associate with hiring and overseeing graduate research assistants.
Assesses the resonance of extremist messaging over social media platforms.
Co-manages the development of client deliverables with Senior Project Manager/Research Associate.
Briefs client, with Senior Project Manager/Research Associate and CTEC Director, on the team’s findings on a monthly basis.
Work with CTEC’s Senior Project Manager/Research Associate to produce and publish open-source research.
Collaborate with CTEC’s leadership personnel to develop broader CTEC technical infrastructure with the goal of publishing open-source tools and code.
Undertakes other support functions for CTEC as requested.Education:
Advanced degree in a related field (International Relations, Statistics, Analytics, Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies)Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Understanding of and interest in extremist movements and groups.
Demonstrated proficiency in a data analysis language (R (preferred), Python, Julia).
Experience with web application frameworks (R Shiny preferred).
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong background in data visualization.
Interest in large-scale investigations of social media.
Foreign language working proficiency is strongly preferred.
Proficiency with Google Suite.
3+ years experience in a related field.Physical Demands:

Essential job functions require ability to sit for extended periods of time, walk, bend, climb, push/pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally. Also requires fine dexterity and ability to grasp, i.e. for writing and word processing/data entry.
