Position Summary:

The Center for Hybrid Approaches in Solar Energy to Liquid Fuels (CHASE) is seeking applicants for a senior research scientist in synthesis. This Fuels from Sunlight Energy Innovation Hub, headquartered at UNC-CH with partner institutions at Yale University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, the University of Pennsylvania, North Carolina State University, and Emory University, will accelerate scientific breakthroughs for advanced energy technology development. This position will serve as the lead research staff member in synthesis, leading of the CHASE Molecular Synthesis User Facility and providing chemical synthesis expertise for collaborative research projects across the Center. Design of synthetic approaches, mentorship in synthetic methods, and planning scale-up procedures will be important components.

Educational Requirements:

A Ph.D. in chemistry focused on or involving organic or inorganic synthetic chemistry.

Qualifications and Experience:

A minimum of five years of laboratory experience in chemical synthesis of organic and inorganic molecules, including the use of preparative and purification equipment, and spectroscopic and analytical instrumentation (including chromatography, HPLC, absorption and emission spectroscopy, NMR, mass spectrometry, and other analytical tools). Work history should also demonstrate experience in laboratory and instrumentation maintenance, safety and chemical hygiene. Experience mentoring junior researchers and managing a laboratory is highly desirable, along with a commitment to establishing and maintaining laboratory best practices, including safety, chemical hygiene and waste handling. Candidate must be enthusiastic, conscientious, safety-oriented, and have superior oral and written communication skills, and be committed to keeping detailed laboratory records. Candidate should demonstrate eagerness to work as part of a team and provide mentorship, training, and support for researchers.
