Position Summary

This position will support research and extension efforts on physiology and management of trees in Christmas tree, nursery, and landscape systems. The individual will be responsible for installation and maintenance of field and greenhouse trials at the Horticulture Teaching and Research Center and other MSU research stations and on-farm trials in collaboration with cooperating growers. This is a multifaceted position that includes field, greenhouse, laboratory, and data analysis/management responsibilities. Field activities include plot layout and design, irrigation management, herbicide mixing and application, operation and maintenance of equipment, and data collection. The individual will conduct and coordinate field, greenhouse, and laboratory research data collection, statistical analysis, and presentation of results. Additional duties include the purchasing of supplies and recruitment and supervision of undergraduate research assistants. Individual will participate in development of Extension resources such as bulletins, articles for professional publications, presentation and webinars, and provide liaison with grower-cooperators

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in horticulture, forestry, or related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in field, greenhouse, experience operating and maintaining a variety of field, greenhouse and laboratory equipment; proficiency in Microsoft Office, ability to conduct and learn statistical analysis with SAS or R software programs. A Michigan Commercial Pesticide Application license is required within one month of hire.

Desired Qualifications
  • Master of Science degree in Horticulture or related field
  • Experience in growing nursery crops in field and container systems
  • Knowledge of Christmas tree production systems
  • Ability to conduct statistical analysis in SAS, or R software programs
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating plant physiology instrumentation (e.g., pressure chamber, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic gas exchange)
  • Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with Word, Power Point, Excel, and SigmaPlot computer programs

This is an off-dated position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

Summary of Physical Demands

Lifting, carrying bagged fertilizer up to 40 lbs; carrying back-pack sparyer (approx. 30lbs) over uneven terrain for extended periods (4 hours).
