Position Summary

In partnership with the Executive Vice President for Health Sciences, develops and implements the strategic integrated marketing and communications program for the Office of Health Sciences (OHS), aligned with the university’s vision, mission and strategic objectives, as well as with overarching university messaging and branding foci. Conceptualizes, plans and coordinates production and distribution of electronic and written materials to communicate and advance the reputation and visibility of the OHS, as well as its mission, vision and strategic initiatives. Extends the MSU/OHS brand through internal and external communication, including website, newsletters, social media, publicity, publications and other touch points. In collaboration with the Executive VP, Chief of Staff and Chief Business Officer, drafts talking points and written responses to inquiries and requests for information. Writes copy for newsletters, electronics communications, reports, speeches and news releases. Responsibilities include internal and external communication and media relations. Assists OHS leadership and the communications managers of the colleges reporting to the OHS, to achieve seamless messaging, yet remain consistent with each college’s individual branding and the overall university brand. Works with our industry partners, health systems partners and higher education partners throughout the state and beyond, to plan and coordinate public relations strategies and collaborative publicity initiatives for special announcements, programs and events, and to facilitate media interactions with the university’s communications team. Collaborates with the university’s communications team and other units in the university on various projects, including cross-college communications and special events. Also collaborates with MSU and OHS development staff and university and OHS external relations offices to achieve optimum alignment with university-wide communications and functions. Demonstrates leadership and commitment by participating in major OHS events and initiatives.

Working in consultation and discussion with the Executive VP for Health Sciences, the assistant vice president for OHS and the OHS Chief Business Officer, the Communications Director will be expected to articulate marketing and communications strategies and tactics in a comprehensive written communications plan that will include use of appropriate metrics to gauge performance and guide improvement. The director will also be responsible for the communications budget which requires working with university Electronic Business System (EBS).

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations or a related field, and five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive professional work experience in marketing communications, public, social and media relations and publication production; demonstrated expertise in developing and executing strategic marketing communications plans; significant experience in creative services, web communication, web-site development and maintenance, list serve creation and management, presentation software and creation and development of public presentations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Master’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, business (marketing focus), health related communications or a related field; five to eight years experience, including experience in communications or leadership position in an academic medical setting; exceptional written communication, editing and proofreading skills; excellent management and employee relations skills; proven team builder; detail- and results-oriented with a proficient application of performance metrics; knowledge of best practices and standards for marketing and public relations; track record of sound fiscal management of a communications/marketing budget; demonstrated ability to design effective messages tailored for multiple and diverse stakeholders; strong track record of sound fiscal management. .Accomplished public relations history and tangible examples of earned media success. Previous work in corporate, agency or health system communications. Social media savvy. Crisis communicator. Hands-on CMS experience (Cascade Server a plus). Innovative, forward thinking and committed; demonstrated integrity, dependability, sound judgment and resourcefulness to establish and maintain collaborative, positive and effective working relationships. Highly organized, adaptable. Clearly able to manage multiple, complex tasks; thrives in a fast-paced, changing environment. Can work independently with minimal supervision or direction, and collaboratively as part of a team. Naturally seeks to develop and nurture relationships and works effectively at all levels of the decision process.
