Position: Assistant Professor of Psychology (Cognitive)
POSITION:
The Department of Psychology at Stetson University is seeking a colleague trained in Cognitive Psychology for a full-time, tenure track assistant professor appointment beginning August 2021. The successful candidate will be a model teacher-scholar who is devoted to teaching and mentoring undergraduate students and to maintaining an outstanding research program involving them.
QUALIFICATIONS:
All applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Psychology from an APA-accredited institution or provide evidence that the Ph.D. will be completed prior to August 2021. The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to liberal arts and sciences education at an undergraduate institution and will show evidence of teaching excellence using a variety of effective methodologies, an ability to diversify our curriculum and pedagogy to meet multiple interests, and will possess a scholarly record which makes evident the ability to establish and maintain a productive research program that includes undergraduate student collaborators. Although the specific area of research expertise is open, preference will be given to those whose research centers on judgement and decision-making, sensation and perception, cognitive neuropsychology, attention, ergonomics, learning and memory, or language, and can intersect with other research areas in or outside the department.
We are especially interested in and encourage applications from candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, an ability to be a role model and mentor for students, and a commitment to enhance opportunities for all students, including those from under-represented groups.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The teaching load is three courses per semester. Primary teaching responsibilities include Cognitive Psychology, Research Methods & Proposal, Senior Project, and Introduction to Psychology. Other courses will be based on the candidate’s area of expertise, which should complement and diversify our current departmental course offerings and/or Stetson’s general education curriculum, including First Year Seminars or Junior Seminars. In addition to maintaining the highest quality of teaching, candidates will be expected to pursue an active research program, which includes undergraduate research assistants and leads to publication in peer-reviewed journals. Other responsibilities include advising of majors and other departmental and university service activities.

The Department:
The Department of Psychology consists of 10 full-time faculty members with a broad range of research interests who are strongly committed to effective teaching and mentoring. We provide a broad and rigorous training program to students pursuing graduate programs in psychology and related areas. Many of our majors author and co-author peer-reviewed publications and present their research in competitive peer-reviewed venues. Our majors also regularly win awards for their undergraduate research at the annual convention of the Southeastern Psychological Association (S.E.P.A.), Stetson Showcase (a daylong research symposium on Stetson’s campus) and other venues. These accomplishments are natural extensions of the community and support shared among the faculty and within the Department.
Stetson’s College of Arts and Sciences (http://www.stetson.edu/portal/artsci/) is the largest and most diverse of the University’s colleges and schools; it includes the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and creative arts. With nineteen academic departments and nine interdisciplinary programs, the College is the liberal arts core of the University. A great strength of the College is its faculty of approximately 140 full-time teacher-scholars. The College offers 31 undergraduate majors and 34 undergraduate minors; six graduate degrees are offered in Education, Counselor Education, and Creative Writing. Every undergraduate major requires a senior research project, giving students the opportunity to design and carry out independent research under faculty mentorship. Our academic programs are shaped by the values of social justice and civic responsibility. All of our courses and programs of study promote engaged learning, whereby students create connections between the classroom or lab and the local, regional, and global community. The academic programs of the College of Arts and Sciences prepare students to live significant lives, to interact with and positively affect the world around them.
