Postdoctoral Fellow – Autonomous Regional Ocean Turbulence

The Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral fellow to study regional horizontal and vertical ocean mixing and its impact on biogeochemical fluxes in oxygen deficient zones, using data from autonomous profiling floats and synthetic drifters driven by regional ocean models. Knowledge of ocean turbulence at small and regional scales, mixing parameterizations, as well as data analysis is required and knowledge of ocean biogeochemistry and experience with Lagrangian models is a plus.

The position is funded by an ONR collaborative study led by Drs. Mark Altabet, Amit Tandon, Geoff Cowles (UMassD), and Eric D’Asaro (UW), and offers broad interdisciplinary work involving analysis of observations produced by regional arrays of autonomous floats some of which are equipped with novel biogeochemical sensors. The fellow will also interact with graduate students and scientists at the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) and the College of Engineering at UMass Dartmouth. Responsibilities include data quality control and archiving as well as participation in conference presentations and writing of articles for peer-reviewed publication. Other responsibilities may include oceanographic cruise participation, assistance in grant proposal writing, and graduate student supervision.

The minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. in oceanography, engineering, environmental physics or a closely-related field. The candidate should be highly motivated and have demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a research group. Organizational proficiency and strong oral and written communication skills are essential. This is a full-time position and is eligible for benefits. The initial appointment at UMass Dartmouth will be for one year, with possibilities for extension to a second and third year.
