Nature of work 

The University of Colorado Cancer Center, headquartered at the Anschutz Medical Campus, is Colorado’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, a distinction recognizing its outstanding contributions to research, clinical trials, prevention and cancer control. CU Cancer Center’s clinical care sites, UCHealth-University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) and Children’s Hospital Colorado, are ranked nationally by U.S. News and World Report. The Thoracic Oncology Research Initiative (TORI) was established with significant support from the Health System, School of Medicine, Cancer Center, University, and philanthropy.

We are seeking an Associate or Full professor in the tenure track to become the Director of TORI. The person in this position will provide leadership and direction for all basic and clinical research issues relating to lung cancer. The person should have a PhD, MD, or equivalent degree, and a robust program of research in lung cancer, whether in basic, clinical or population science, with evidence of research accomplishments, national funding, and leadership in thoracic oncology.

The CU Cancer Center consists of approximately 300 researchers and physicians at multiple campuses (primarily Anschutz Medical Campus and Boulder) and healthcare delivery institutions (primarily UCHealth, CHCO, VA). The CU Cancer Center is a member of the prestigious National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN), an alliance of the nation’s leading cancer centers working to establish and deliver the gold standard in cancer clinical guidelines. CU Cancer Center also is a member of the Oncology Research Information Exchange Network (ORIEN), a unique research partnership among North America’s top cancer centers leveraging multiple data sources and matching patients to targeted treatments. The CU Cancer Center has a long history of excellence in lung cancer research, including in prevention and therapeutic development. These efforts have been funded by an NCI Lung Cancer SPORE and numerous other multi-PI programs. The pulmonary and lung surgery program associated with our Cancer Center has been ranked #1 or #2 in the nation for the past 10 years by U.S. News and World Report. In addition, trainees can be funded by our T32 training grant in Lung/Head and Neck Cancers, as well as our institutional K12, CCTSI, and numerous other training grants.  CU Cancer Center members conduct scientific studies in thoracic oncology that span the entire spectrum from fundamental research to clinical trials and include population science research. We also have a vibrant clinical program in lung cancer at UCH, our primary adult teaching hospital, that works in conjunction with the new Center for Lungs and Breathing, a recent entity formed to facilitate a “full service one stop shop” for patients with lung disease.

Canditates should have an established background in Thoracic Oncology research. Faculty appointments will be in the appropriate Department in the School of Medicine.  This appointment is accompanied by an endowed chair and significant financial resources to stimulate and sustain a robust program of research in lung cancer.

Examples of Work Performed

- Provide basic and clinical research leadership and direction for all policy and programmatic issues relating to lung cancer.

- Develop funding proposals to support research in lung cancer.

- Publish in peer-reviewed journals.

- Engage with diverse professional colleagues working on lung cancer research.

- Prepare annual progress reports for the clinical and translational aspects of thoracic oncology for the CU Cancer Center Director

This position will report to the Chair of the appointing department under the primary appointment, and to the Director of the CU Cancer Center.

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Experience in conducting clinically-based lung cancer research.
• Knowledge of methods suitable to oversee research studies in etiology, pathology, biology, prevention, or therapy of lung cancer.
• Experience in developing and managing research grants and/or clinical trials portfolios
• Team orientation and skills for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Required Qualifications

• PhD, MD, or MD PhD
• National leadership in thoracic oncology related research
• Strong track record of peer-reviewed, industry and other relevant funding and published research in the peer-reviewed literature on thoracic oncology
• Experience and success in programmatic leadership

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong track record of impactful research activity and NIH/NCI funding
