The Department of Orthopedics has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Director of Finance and Administration position.

Nature of Work
The Orthopedics Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the administrative activities of the Department and ensuring compliance with all internal and external policies and procedures that govern the department’s efforts. The DFA oversees the Department’s fiscal affairs, human resources, and day-to-day operations in support of the Department’s and school’s mission and goals. The DFA serves as the Department representative for the School of Medicine (SOM) and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus with regard to relevant fiscal and administrative matters.  This role ensures consistency between the policies and procedures of the Department and those of the SOM and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.  This role is also responsible for oversight in strategic planning, executing initiatives and guiding growth in the Department in partnership with the unit leaders. 

Supervision Received
Reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Orthopedics with a dotted line report to the Senior Associate Dean for Administration and Finance through the Dean’s Office.  

Supervision Exercised
Supervision over administrative staff with direct and indirect supervision. This includes approximately 48 staff, of which approximately 4 are direct reports and 38 are indirect reports. The Department has more than 200 employees, including physicians, staff, research personnel and administrative assistants.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Within the guidelines of the University, Campus, School, and other appropriate agencies develops, recommends, and implements administrative and fiscal policies and procedures for Orthopedics
  • Administers all funds of the Orthopedics including clinical revenue, state appropriations, gifts, grants, and contracts
  • Serves as Fiscal Authority for the financial and administrative operations of the Department of Orthopedics in conjunction with the Chair
  • Manages and oversees all aspects of the Department’s clinical enterprise, including budget preparation, business development, financial analysis, benchmarking, incentive distribution, and faculty productivity
  • Responsible for compensation modeling, recruitment, and oversight of all acquisitions
  • Responsible for operationalizing medical education at Boulder Sports Performance (includes inventory management, contracting, financial analysis, etc.) and sustaining a profitable model
  • Responsible for managing the Department of Orthopedics interests and opportunity on joint ventures with UCHealth and other partners
  • Acts as the lead representative for the Department of Orthopedics for all strategic planning at the Orthopedics Institute within Children’s Hospital Colorado
  • Responsible for implementation of new compensation model with each new acquisition
  • Collaborates with UCH and CHCO Practice Directors and Practice Managers, and other partners, to develop provider productivity dashboards, analyze clinical data, and implement necessary process improvements for greater productivity and revenue
  • Oversees and/or manages the submission of all Orthopedics grants and contracts  
  • Oversees and manages all operational and fiscal activities of the Sports Medicine Program, including, managing the Storm/Rapids Soccer sponsorship
  • Oversee and manager all personnel and administrative activities for the department
  • Fosters and promotes financial growth and viability of Orthopedics through identification and development of new funding sources and opportunities
  • Oversees and leads the Department’s marketing, website, and social media efforts
  • Oversees and manages the professional sports agreements with KSE, Rockies, Broncos, and others as appropriate

QualificationsMinimum Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, or business/public administration, or a related field
    • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis. Professional level management experience may be substituted for the field of study requirements.
  • Four (4) years of broad and diversified professional level management experience that included fiscal management responsibilities within a complex health care, academic or biomedical research setting
Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s Degree in Health Administration, Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or related field is highly preferred
  • Eight (8) years of experience working in a health care or academic medical setting
  • Experience working in a Orthopedics setting
  • Experience in Clinical Research Management, including applying for federal grants (NIH, DOD, PCORI, etc.)
