Position Summary:

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing, a research
intensive, top-ranked school of nursing, seeks outstanding candidates for tenured/tenure track positions at the rank of Professor to serve as Associate Dean for Research. The Associate Dean for Research of the School of Nursing (SON) is the academic administrative officer for research, research support services, and research faculty. The Associate Dean guides the direction of the school’s research programs and advocates for the school and nursing research mission and the development and support needs of faculty. The Associate Dean also provides oversight for the Research Support Center (RSC), and as such, is the administrative officer of the Research Support Center. S/he also chairs the Research Division, the administrative home for faculty whose primary function is research related.

The Associate Dean for Research reports to the Dean. S/he works closely with other Associate and Assistant Deans to facilitate the research endeavors of the school and faculty and works closely with the Associate Dean of the PhD Division and PhD Program to facilitate extramural grant submissions by doctoral and postdoctoral students. The Associate Dean also works closely with and maintains liaison relationships with various University research offices and committees.

The Associate Dean serves as Chair of the Research Support Center Policy Board, a six-member board of faculty elected from the Tenure Track faculty. The Policy Board is advisory to the Associate Dean on policy and strategic priorities for the Research Support Center and serves as the review panel for school awarded small grants.

Reporting to the Associate Dean is the Research Support Center staff, including the Director, research consultants, editors, statisticians, statistical programmers, administrative assistants, processing assistants, research assistants, and budget personnel.

As Division Head (Research Division), the Associate Dean oversees faculty recruitment, appointment and promotion, and performance evaluations for faculty whose primary focus is on research-related endeavors, advocates for these faculty as needed in various school forums, and holds regular meetings of the Division faculty.

Regularly scheduled meetings of the Dean’s Leadership Team, Executive Team, the Academic Affairs and Policy Council (AAPC), the Assembled Faculty, PhD Faculty, and standing and ad hoc committees and task forces provide formal mechanisms for the Associate Dean to develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the school.

Educational Requirements:

A PhD or research doctorate in nursing and/or related field.

Qualifications and Experience:

Roles and Responsibilities

•Advocates for the research mission of the school and the research development and support needs of faculty.

•Stimulates and leads the development of the school’s research programs and initiatives.

•Works with faculty to identify opportunities for, develop, and apply for funding for centers of research excellence.

•Mentors tenure track faculty on the development of their research programs.

•Disseminates information about research endeavors and accomplishments.

•Maintains contacts with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other funding agencies.

•Promotes the use and development of the Biobehavioral Laboratory’s biological and behavioral assessment facilities.

•Manages intramural research awards programs.

•Maintains liaison relationships with University research offices and represents the school on appropriate University and Hospital research committees.

•Oversees research outreach initiatives, including the production of the annual Research Chronicle edition of Carolina Nursing.

•Oversights and manages post-award compliance.

•Provides oversight and supervision for the Director of the Research Support Center who:

oManages, sets the direction, and continuously improves the operations of the RSC
oManages space allocations for research and other SON externally funded projects
oManages research grant submissions and transfers
oCoordinates and directs consultation by faculty experts associated with RSC
oParticipates in the Research Support Center Policy Board

•Consults with faculty on research and grant proposal preparation and research start-up packages.

•Facilitates extramural grant submissions by doctoral/postdoctoral students.

•As Head of the Research Division, s/he is responsible for the recruitment, hiring appointment, promotion, and performance evaluation of faculty with research track appointments and the RSC staff.

•Oversees the budget of the Research Support Center and earned overhead accounts of extramurally-funded investigators.

•Has signatory authority on all documents, reports, and financial transactions relative to research and research grants.

•Appointment, promotion, and performance evaluation of Research Division faculty.

•Services provided by the RSC.

•Space allocation for research and other SON externally funded projects.

•Intramural and extramural research grants.

•Operational budgets for RSC.
