Organizational Unit Overview:

The mission and vision of the Department of Public Health in the Brody School of Medicine to address health disparities in Eastern North Carolina through multi-disciplinary Public Health approaches.

Eastern North Carolina has significant health burdens, especially in the rural, low-income and racial and ethnic minority communities in our region. Many of these issues are brought to light through environmental impacts in our region, such as natural disasters and climate change, as well as through the social determinants of health, which is a major driving force for our teaching, research and service.

The Department of Public Health has a number of learning opportunities including two online Certificate programs, three MPH concentrations (which can also be completed online) and the DrPH program in Health Policy, Administration, and Leadership and Environmental and Occupational Health.

The Department of Public Health is also very collaborative in research and service and work with a number of local, regional, state and national public health and health care agencies.

We also have a fantastic group of Community Advisory Board members who lend their expertise to us to help us achieve our program goals.

Job Duties :

Confer with supervisor to discuss program goals and course objectives;

Develop and deliver a curriculum that addresses course objectives;

Utilize innovative classroom techniques and methodologies that involve students in challenging learning opportunities;

Network with University and community resources to include creative active-learning experiences;

Provide feedback to students that will enhance their academic growth;

Monitor and report student attendance;

Refer to the supervisor those students not making adequate progress;

Attend faculty meetings to formatively evaluate student progress and determine;

Complete summative evaluations highlighting students’ strengths and needs improvement strategies for students;

Planning, preparing and delivering lessons to all students in the class in an online environment;

Teaching according to the educational needs, abilities and achievement of the individual students and groups of students;
Assigning work, correcting and marking work carried out by students;

Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress, attainment and behavior of students;

Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual students or groups of students;
Promoting the progress and well-being of individual students, groups of students in an assigned course;

Communicating, consulting and co-operating with other faculty to ensure the best interest of students;

Reviewing and evaluating one’s own teaching and learning strategies, methodologies and programs in accordance with ECU, Department of Public Health and CEPH credential requirements;

Co-operating with other instructors in the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, and assessments.
Ensuring high standards of professional practice and quality of teaching and learning of the assigned subject matter;

Through effective dialogue, participating in reciprocal peer review and observation of class teaching practices;
Maintaining good order and discipline amongst students under one’s care and safeguarding their health and safety at all times;
Participating in staff, group or other meetings related to the school curriculum for the better organization and administration of the instructional programs.

Minimum Education/Experience :

PhD, DrPH, Medical degree required;

Demonstrated ability to develop innovative curriculum in line with course objectives and competencies;

Expertise in academic area and use of technology in classroom;

Demonstrated experience with rural project participants with diverse backgrounds;

Demonstrated ability to motivate students toward academic endeavors

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :


Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

Teaching experience with graduate and doctoral students
