Primary Function of Organizational Unit :

This position is housed within the College of Nursing Student Services area located on East Carolina University’s West Campus. The College of Nursing Student Services includes support services for both undergraduate and graduate prospective and current students. The College of Nursing plans to increase student enrollment in the RN-BSN option and maintain enrollment in the prelicensure BSN programs. The College of Nursing utilizes professional academic advisors to provide information regarding course selection, understanding university and college policies and procedures as well as implementing retention strategies to help students progress towards degree completion. This position also engages in recruitment efforts such as ECU’s Open House and monthly information sessions for prospective students. Advisors in the College of Nursing work with students enrolled in the pre-licensure BSN, ABSN and RN/BSN option. Currently, the College of Nursing academic advisors work with approximately 2300 declared and intended nursing majors. The Academic Advisor may teach a section of COAD 1000.

The candidate selected for this position will be hired as a .70fte (26 hours per week) temporary employee, through June 30, 2021.

This position reports to the Associate Director of Student Services.

Job Duties :

The Academic Advisor’s primary role is to provide individual advising to undergraduate students. The Advisor works with students to enhance engagement in their major, college, university, and community at large. He or she makes personal contact with students; provides guidance about proper procedures regarding all necessary academic forms and use of electronic advising resources; refers students to appropriate university units, learning resources, and personnel; obtains and supplies students with supportive technical information; and meets with students who are in academic difficulty. In addition, the Advisor will help students with course selection, entry into a concentration, registration, and review of records.

The Academic Advisor will serve as a member of the academic advising team. The Academic Advisor works in partnership with undergraduate degree program directors and faculty to ensure that students stay on course with professional requirements throughout their program of study. The Advisor participates in professional development opportunities, teaches freshman seminar, and serves on university committees. The Advisor participates in university events and recruitment activities such as Open House and new student orientations. The Advisor is also responsible for recommending and implementing new and improved programs and systems to improve student retention and persistence to graduation.

Minimum Education/Experience :

This position requires a master’s degree received from an appropriately accredited institution and conferred by the time of hire.

Due to accreditation requirements, if the advisor is a nurse, he/she shall hold a current unrestricted license as a registered nurse in North Carolina and if employed after July 1, 1992 shall have had a minimum of 2 calendar years prior, full-time employment or the equivalent in clinical nursing practice as a registered nurse.

The following criteria are essential for the position: Teaching, advising, and/or counseling experience in higher education; knowledge of college student development; and strong interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and customer-service skills.

The candidate will also need strong computer skills and should enjoy working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
