Position Description:
The UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry (C2i2) is an interdisciplinary research center committed to holding those who create unjust technologies and systems accountable for the erosion of equity, trust, and participation in order to reimagine technology, champion racial justice, and strengthen democracy. Co-Founded by Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble and Dr. Sarah T. Roberts, the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry is committed to community impact through research, culture making, and public policy.

The Artistic Director is responsible for contributing to the mission of C2i2 through compelling artistic programming and engagement. The Artistic Director is a public figure, and as such, one goal is to attract and engage constituencies outside of traditional areas of engagement for a research focused academic center. Ongoing relationships with the media and key communities is key to this role. The Artistic Director should have their own artistic practice and be working on both creative output and supportive media for that work. The individual will have experience effectively messaging issues and contact through visual means while advancing their goals through advertising, promotional materials, social media, publications, outreach channels, videos, and interactive medias. The candidate should be familiar with media and design best practices across digital, print, social media, and film to be able to effectively manage a diverse range of visual projects. The Artistic Director will be engaged with issues of technology and racial and social justice and will be closely connected with the research and output of C2i2.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: maintaining an independent art practice, collaborating on curriculum and pedagogical materials that connect C2i2's mission with existing art practices; cultivate and maintain relationships with arts organizations and communities; identify opportunities for collaborations, artistic exchange and partnerships that build cultural bridges, leverage resources and extend the reach of C2i2.
