Position Summary:

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is responsible for supporting the IT needs of UC Irvine faculty, students, and staff. Our mission is to provide information technology leadership, services, and innovative solutions to promote the research, education, and community service goals of the university.

Under the general supervision of the Data Center Manager, the Server / Storage Administrator applies skills as a seasoned and experienced VMWare Systems Administrator in support of a highly complex and critical virtual Server and Storage infrastructure. Possesses a full understanding of industry best practices and campus, medical center or Office of the President policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues that are moderately complex in scope. Selects methods and techniques to obtain solutions. Evaluates new technologies including performing simple to moderate cost / benefit analyses and server lifecycle management. Ability to manage projects that involve large systems optimization and fine-tuning, risk analysis and remediation, and process improvement.

Minimum 3-year work experience in an IT related position required. Work experience related to virtualization and server administration and working knowledge of networking required.

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Demonstrated experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration.

Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.

Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.

Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software.

Advance working knowledge and experience with VMware.

General knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.

Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.

Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.

Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.

Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

Basic knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs.


Industry certifications is a plus.

Detail-oriented with a passion for technology. Demonstrated good communicator, problem-solver, and quick learner.

Programming experience is a plus. NetApp experience is a plus. Proficient with VMWare, Python, PowerShell, and JavaScript. Familiar with Linux OS and Windows OS.

Ability to independently identify and resolve server and storage related issues. Effective time management skills for efficient completion of tasks.

Stays current with technological developments in server and virtualization technologies.
