The Department of Africana Studies at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a tenure stream assistant professor faculty position in Race and Inequality in Black Communities in the United States (with a secondary focus on other countries of Africa and the African Diaspora welcomed but not required). This position will begin in Fall 2021 and is part of a wider cluster hire on “Race, Representation, and Anti-Black and Systemic Racism.” This position will focus on explicit analyses of race and inequality and their impact on Black communities from the candidate’s area of expertise. Desirable research and teaching interests include, but are not limited to, policy and community development, criminal justice, policing and incarceration, political economy, education, social movements (including Black Lives Matter), environmental studies, and transnationalism. The scholar for this position would examine anti-Black and systemic racism in their research and incorporate social justice perspectives. A PhD in Africana Studies is preferred, but we also welcome applications from across the range of humanities and social science disciplines. Applicants should have their PhD in hand or expected by August 1, 2021. Responsibilities will include the teaching of Introduction of Africana Studies, Dimensions of Racism, other courses in the existing curriculum, and courses in the candidate’s area of specialization. The expected course load for this position is two courses per semester. The position start date is September 1, 2021.
