Director of Academic Support

Texas Lutheran University, a Hispanic Serving Institution, invites applications for the position of Director of Academic Support, to begin January 2021. The Director is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Academic Support Center and serves as the institutional leader for academic support programming.  Initiatives include program administration of: Supplemental Instruction, Collaborative Learning Assistance (tutoring), Peer Academic Coaching, and Developing Scholars (for probation students). Additionally, the Director participates in the Early Alert program, provides campus wide workshops and presentations, works closely with the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, and offers individualized support to help all students become more effective learners.  The Director is responsible for cultivating and maintaining collaborative relationships with faculty and their colleagues within the Student Life & Learning Division. The Director reports to the to the Associate Dean of Student Life & Learning.

Position qualifications include:

  • Master’s degree in assessment, counseling, psychology, adult education, developmental education, special education, student development or related fields from an accredited college or university is required. Preference for MA in Learning Support and/or Developmental Education Administration.
  • Minimum of 3-4 years’ experience at a higher education institution with experience in student academic mentoring, tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, freshman transition issues and/or working with students having academic challenges. Preference will be given to applicants who have experience working with students of varying academic and cultural backgrounds, including those with identified learning disabilities.
  • Successful completion of Supplemental Instruction Supervisor training is preferred. Experience with CRLA International Tutor Training Program Certification and/or National College Learning Association certification are a plus.
  • Understanding and support of the mission of Texas Lutheran University
  • Knowledge of best practices in education theories and learning assistance programs and methods including retention and assessment.
  • Experience with student outreach, Supplemental Instruction, and tutors.
  • Experience with the American with Disabilities Act in a college/university setting.
  • Ability to use standard academic support assessment programs, such as LASSI and LASSI+.
  • Ability to coordinate a multi-purpose, multi-discipline, comprehensive learning center. Must be resourceful and able to work independently.
  • Evidence of successful collaboration with faculty, staff and students.
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software; the use of technology to communicate with students.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adhere to University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
