Job Summary


The Senior Coordinator of Budget and Financial Analysis (BFA) in conjunction with the Assistant Chancellor, will manage the accounting and financial reporting aspects of campus budgets; prepare key financial analysis and reports (Budget Summary for Operations, Financial Statements and Management Reports, etc.); play an active role in managing self-supporting activities (“service centers”) including the establishment of new activities, the evaluation of existing activities, the development and review of service rates, and the management of deficits; and lead projects or meetings and serve as a primary BFA liaison in a variety of capacities.


Job Responsibilities (Essential Duties)

Budgets: Assist with all aspects of budgeting activities under the purview of the office, including budget development and reconciliations; preparation of the Budget Summary for Operations (BSO); posting batch and individual journal vouchers; assisting with the maintenance and management of campus budgets; generating error-reports and resolving errors; and customer service.

Analysis: Provide recurring and ad hoc financial and analytical support to senior campus officers and University business managers. Prepare, present and interpret complex financial information for business and non-business audiences.

Reporting: Assist with preparation and review of internally generated monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad-hoc reports for all of the colleges and administrative units including the Financial Statements and Management Reports for each College / Administrative Unit. Perform complex analyses, reconciliations, and quality control steps to ensure products are consistent and reliable. Expand reporting as needed to meet campus and University Administration (UA) needs.

Deficits: Assist with the management of the University’s deficit reduction plan process including follow up and related detailed analysis to identify sustainable changes to avoid future deficits.

Self-Supporting Activities: Review financial pro formas and assist with the development of new campus self-supporting activities. Assist the Assistant Chancellor in performance of an oversight and analysis role in support of campus auxiliary, hospital, and other self-supporting units.

Project Management: Lead campus initiatives that involve negotiating the scope, timeline and resources; project planning; benchmarking; development of policy and procedures; stakeholder analysis and formulation of a vetting strategy; preparation and presentation of job aids and training materials; development of a communication plan; and implementation.

Meetings: Serve as a resource for the Budget Office, working with campus units and UA. Provide subject matter expertise and guidance on State and institutional regulations; policies and procedures; and all aspects of budgeting. Lead or serve as member on various subcommittees and meetings.

Transparency: Work to consistently communicate with campus customers, seeking input to shape policies, procedure, and practices and to identify opportunities for improved or enhanced service.

Perform other related duties as appropriate for a Senior Coordinator.

Job Knowledge & Skills, Education, Experience

Bachelor's degree required; preferably in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.

Five years' budgeting, business, financial, or accounting experience, preferably in a large and complex University or not-for-profit setting. Expertise related to business and financial operations. Working knowledge of accounting theories, methods and procedures.

Strong analytical skills with extensive experience using include Microsoft Office products (Excel, Access) for financial analysis and reporting. Experience with Quality Control and attention to detail.

Demonstrated leadership skills. Outstanding verbal and written communications skills and exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills.

Experience working with executive leadership that includes preparing summaries of complex information or drafting communications or policy on behalf of management.

Experience working with self-supporting activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Business, Finance, or Health Care Management.

Knowledge of the University of Illinois at Chicago, SCT Banner finance module, SAP Business Objects, EDDIE, and other related campus-based business / finance systems.

Experience with project management and policy development. Expertise related to the implementation of new procedures and practices. Experienced trainer.

Experience working in a complex regulatory environment. Knowledge of federal and State regulations governing University business and financial activities.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred. General office environment.

Working Conditions

General office environment. Regular travel not expected but may occur occasionally around previously scheduled events. Requires sitting for extended periods of time, standing, visual acumen, manual dexterity and fingering for working with computer key boards.
