The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Advising Office’s mission is to teach, assist, and empower students to define, clarify and achieve academic and personal goals through professional, caring service.

The College is seeking an Academic Counselor to work with Integrative Studies and Social Science majors.

Position Overview:

This position is responsible for providing guidance to students by appraising their interests, aptitudes, and abilities to develop a career path and degree fit. Connects students with available resources for academic success and personal/professional development. This position is responsible for creating and implementing programs related to student success and retention.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate). • Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory. • Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. • Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation. • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing. • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships. • Ability to work independently. • Remains active in professional development.

Preferred Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

At least two years of academic counseling experience in higher education setting preferred.

Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; occasional overtime

Advising Policy:1. Performs advanced advising work in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences regarding degree requirements, complex academic issues and targeted populations.2. Interprets and makes decisions regarding academic policies. 3.Provides advanced advising services for complex degree audits. 4. Evaluates progress to graduation. 5. Assumes many of the applicability decisions done by faculty advisors in departments.

o:

Advising Communication with Students: 1. Corresponds with students concerning questions about degree requirements, transfer hours, etc via various forms of communication when the student is not present. 2. Provides information and answers questions for prospective students and parents. 3. Uses academic counseling skills to explore and/or confirm major choice while utilizing appropriate resources.. 4. Uses creativity and advanced knowledge to advise students on ways to enhance and market their degree utilizing career-related resources. 5. Provides appropriate referrals to online and campus resources and follows-up with students on usage of referrals. 6. Serves as on-call advisor for the office serving all CLASS majors by answering phone calls, emails and seeing walkins and/or assisting at the front desk on an as-needed basis.

Advising Documentation: 1. Documents advising-related work in Salesforce.

o:

Degree Planning: 1. Prepares, updates and checks degree audits of self and others as needed, prioritizing VA, Athletes, Financial Aid and other exceptional degree audits. 2. Advanced evaluation of transfer work to determine degree audit applicability. 3. Confers with supervisor and faculty regarding course substitutions/memos. Makes changes in degree audits when discrepancies or substitutions occur.

o:

Graduation Applications: 1. Processes graduation applications. Advises students when complex problems or questions arise. Informs them of discrepancies, GPA and other requirements. 2. Confers with supervisor, faculty, and Registrar’s Office concerning complex course substitutions/memos.

o:

Orientations: . 1. Serves as a resource and problem solver in College orientation sessions. 2. Evaluates transfer course application toward University Core and CLASS Requirements. 3. Conducts departmental orientation advising sessions, academic planning, and student success presentation as needed. .

o:

Programming, Intervention and Outreach: 1. Conducts programs, workshops, or group advising sessions for students as needed 2. Counsels and gives presentations about major and career development.. 3. Prepares and analyzes data to develop strategies, protocols and programs for targeted student populations. 4. Initiates intrusive communication and follow up related to programming, outreach, or specific student issues. 5. Coordinates and leads various student success programs.

Advising-Related Responsiblities: 1. Reviews and updates both three- and four-year plans, catalog copy, encoding in uAchieve and major-specific articulation guides for area community colleges. 2. Researches and recommends approval/ disapproval of duplication and equivalency requests from Registrar’s Office. 3. Coordinates and participates in recruitment programs for targeted populations (Eagle Landings, Preview Day, etc).

Leadership: 1. Serves as a referral resource for team members regarding complex major, career, and counseling situations. 2. Manages and prioritizes paperwork and projects as assigned for the individual’s specific Academic Counselor position and maintains procedural documentation for projects. 3. Effectively communicates information to team, supervisor or office regarding the individual’s specific Academic Counselor position.

Cooperation & Professionalism: 1. Promotes good will with students and is effective in handling a variety of student situations. 2. Works in a professional cooperative manner with faculty and staff across campus. 3. Demonstrates an ability to be an effective team member of the office by assisting others when needed. 4. Performs all duties in a professional manner. 5. Participates in functions & events outside of the normal work schedule. 6. Greets all office visitors in a friendly, cooperative and helpful manner. 7. Participates in professional development opportunities.
