The Department of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for a Full Professor position in either the non-tenure clinician educator track or the tenure track. Expertise is required in the specific area of leadership and a national and international reputation as a top scientist/researcher. Applicants must have an M.D. and/or Ph.D degree.

Teaching responsibilities may include supporting and advancing the educational structure and oversight for trainees in the Research Institute (students, residents, fellows, post-docs, etc.) and strengthening efforts to guide early career faculty in need of mentoring through K awards and initial R01s.

Clinical responsibilities may include assuring the appropriate care and protocol oversight among human subjects.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include leading the Research Institute of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and supporting the ongoing achievement of CHOP's tripartite mission of clinical care, research, and education. The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) is accountable for maintaining CHOP's position as the pre-eminent global children's research organization by ensuring delivery of groundbreaking science that translates into innovation and improvement in the health of children.

The CSO will have the opportunity for substantial recruitment and will guide faculty development, research program development, and evaluation with specific attention to the interface between the Research Institute and health system's strategic efforts to further its mission as an international pediatric health care leader and innovator. In addition, the CSO will be actively involved in fundraising activities to support recruitment and program development.

To be successful, the CSO will work to align and engage the broader enterprise, including the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, while advancing a research strategy. The CSO will also ensure that the right team is in place to achieve its priorities and collaborate effectively with Department Chairs and CEO Council colleagues to support the attainment of overall organizational goals. As a key member of the executive team, the CSO will help the CEO ensure sophisticated leadership to support continued growth and better integrate operating units across the enterprise.

The CHOP Research Institute operates across 1.5M square feet of research space among six facilities on a $500M budget and has over 1,000 employees. The CSO will be directly reporting to the CEO and President of CHOP (Madeline Bell).
