Summary of Duties:

As a member of the WSU Tree Fruit Extension Team, the Extension ITT Coordinator for Communications will contribute to the outreach efforts targeted to the Washington State tree fruit industry. This position will collaborate with diverse team members, WSU researchers and industry stakeholders to ensure outreach is effectively delivered across multiple platforms. This position will develop a communication plan for a wide array of projects and initiatives that benefit diverse audiences, including tree fruit growers, allied industry, orchard employees, researchers and students. Delivery methods should include but not limited to printed documents, videos, webinars, social media, webpage, podcast and others. The Communications Specialist must be flexible, curious, eager to learn, and comfortable with change in a fast-moving environment. Critical skills include the abilities to: synthesize, simplify and explain complex information; anticipate questions and articulate answers; work independently and productively; manage time and competing demands and tasks efficiently; and communicate effectively with a wide range of people and personality types.

Required Qualifications:

Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications or related field and two (2) years of professional level writing/editing experience which has included word processing computer applications and a demonstrated knowledge of graphic arts principles. A Master’s degree in a relevant field may be substituted for up to (1) one year of the required experience.

Additional Requirements:

Must have, or able to obtain, a valid driver’s license by time of hire.

Must be able and willing to travel to various locations around the state.

Must have strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe applications.

Must have a working knowledge of desktop publishing software such as inDesign or other info-graphics development applications.

Must be familiar with the use of Photoshop or other image editing software.

Must be familiar with video editing software such as Camtasia, Premier-Pro or similar editing applications.

Must be familiar with posting to social media including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Familiarity with working in WordPress desirable.

Demonstrated ability to adapt easily to frequent changes in priorities and circumstances

Ability to ensure WSU standards are applied to all materials produced and services that the tree fruit team develops.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong working knowledge of the use of Adobe Creative Cloud software (ex: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)

Strong working knowledge of the use of Camtasia or other video platform for video editing.

Experience with podcasting applications.

Bilingual (Spanish and English)

Strong interpersonal communication skills, to participate in meetings, listen carefully and get clarification on assignments as needed.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
