99202Summary of Duties:
This position is headquartered at the WSU Spokane County Extension Office and is responsible for the leadership, curriculum development, and outreach for horticulture and small farms programs across a multi-county region in Eastern Washington. Programmatic emphasis will focus on horticultural production, pest management, and small scale farming development and marketing assistance to a variety of audiences, including growers, nursery and landscape companies, small-scale producers, and the general public. The position also provides faculty-level leadership to the various county Master Gardener and Small Farms Programs in the northeast region of the state. This position is expected to conduct applied research within the parameters of the job responsibilities addressing issues and opportunities of highest priority to area producers.
The incumbent will be expected to develop a sustained program and acquire extramural funding to support and strengthen on-going programs as well as new program initiatives. This person will also facilitate and promote WSU programs and research opportunities through collaborative relationships with other Extension specialists and WSU researchers. •Earned Master’s degree in horticulture, plant science, entomology, integrated pest management, or other degree directly related to the subject matter areas of this position.
•Demonstrated ability to lead as well as to participate in interdisciplinary and multi-agency teams
•Ability to communicate ideas effectively through written, verbal, and technology when relating to a variety of audiences.
•PhD preferred in horticulture, plant science, entomology, integrated pest management, or closely related discipline
•Experience/training in agribusiness planning, development, and marketing
•Demonstrated success in grant writing and extramural funds development
•Documented record of scholarship in subject matter closely aligned with this position
•Demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of educational programs using a variety of methodologies, including distance education and educational events
•Strong ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written, and listening skills in relating to a variety of audiences, including elected officials, staff, volunteers, media, agency representatives, and youth
•Ability to interact effectively with diverse audiences and clientele
•Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and manage volunteer programs, including training and curriculum management
•Demonstrated proficiency in digital and internet-based technology to support program delivery
•Ability to understand marketing systems and trends
•Ability to conduct needs assessments and integrates such assessments into program planning, implementation, delivery, and outcome evaluation
•Demonstrated skill in applied research and demonstration methodologies for horticultural practices, small, direct-market or diversified farm development, and urban agriculture development
•Academic training or expertise that will insure a strong connection to research and extension centers, as well as academic departments within the College of Agriculture, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences
•Experience working in media outreach, including traditional forms (e.g. print and broadcast) and technology-based (social media, podcasts, blogs etc.)
