Summary of Duties:This position will carry-out research aimed to develop solutions to major diseases of pome fruit in the Pacific Northwest. The Research Associate is expected to work independently to manage duties and tasks outlined in the project. These include, but not limited to, designing, developing and implementing field and lab protocols to study the diseases and evaluate the efficacy of methods used to control them or develop novel approaches. Duties will include field trials, data collection, data analyses and summary of results. The incumbent will attend professional and stakeholder meetings to present their findings and will summarize them for publication in peer reviewed scientific and extension journals. The incumbent is expected to play a major role in training undergraduate and graduate students in the lab.
Additional Information:Washington State University (WSU) is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to develop solutions to major pathogens of pome fruit grown organically in the Pacific Northwest.
The successful candidate will be working at WSU’s Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center (TFREC, Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center ) in Wenatchee, Washington located in the heart of one of the largest pome fruit production regions in the world and only two hours east of the beautiful city of Seattle.
The successful candidate will conduct research aimed to develop effective organic methods to control apple diseases pre and postharvest, i.e. assessing adequacy of current approaches and developing novel and more efficient strategies. Research will include biologicals, GRAS and biopesticides in combination with different types of storage atmospheres.

Monthly Salary:Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience.
Required Qualifications:PhD. in Plant Pathology, Molecular biology/ecology, Mycology, or related scientific fields obtained within 5 years of the start date.
Strong demonstrated background in microbiomes and demonstrated technical experience with fungi.
Demonstrate full attention to details, excellent record keeping and ability to conduct statistical analyses.
Must be exceptionally self-motivated, have excellent organizational, interpersonal and both oral and written communication skills.
Expertise in microbiome analyses will be viewed positively.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced
Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.
Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
