Summary of Duties:

The Institute for Research and Education to Advance Community Health (IREACH) at Washington State University is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate focusing on health disparities research in Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations. IREACH comprises a team of about 70 faculty and staff engaged in conducting community-engaged multidisciplinary research, training and education, and outreach with underserved populations. Our priority populations are American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, Hispanic/LatinX, and rural people. Our research includes both observational and randomized controlled trials. At IREACH we are deeply committed to community capacity building, equitable research partnerships, and promoting racial justice in academia and public health research.

At IREACH we conduct public health research aligned with this mission, collaborating with other faculty at the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, and other Colleges across the University.

As the state’s land-grant university, the College of Medicine features a community-based curriculum with the stated mission of “equipping students to become health care leaders of the future, ready to serve in communities where they are needed most.”

Specific areas of interest are flexible, so long as they relate to health disparities research with one or more of the IREACH priority populations and overlap with existing IREACH expertise.

The postdoctoral fellow will be supervised and mentored by the IREACH Director, and can be located in Seattle or Spokane. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to participate in efforts to acquire additional funding through competitive grant applications. We typically encourage our postdoctoral fellows to submit a K01 application within the first year of their employment, although other mechanisms may be substituted on a case-by-case basis. We provide extensive support for study design, crafting the career development plan, and writing the funding application. Although business travel is currently on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this position could require occasional travel (< 5%) to locations including Washington; and Native communities in Hawaii.

This is a temporarily funded, one (1) year postdoctoral fellowship with subsequent renewals subject to satisfactory performance, mutual consent, and available funding.

Required Qualifications:

PhD in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, the social sciences, or in another field relevant to public health research and primary interest in Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander health disparities research.

Preferred Qualifications:

Aptitude for communicating clearly about epidemiological concepts, study design, and research findings to non-specialists and lay-audiences.

Ability and desire to undertake new and/or uncomfortable challenges with a high level of independence.

Commitment to, or interest in, addressing health disparities.
