JOB SUMMARY:

The Production Editor provides high-level editorial direction, superintends the publishing process, liaises with external vendors and partners, manages contracts, and ensures that publications meet quality standards. Some publications may require additional developmental editing/author support, line editing, design attention, as well as occasional accelerated production.

JOB DUTIES:

70% - Essential - Publishing:
Oversees the publishing process of The Journal of Extension and other publications as assigned. Responsibilities include: setting and maintaining production schedules; maintaining manuscript-submission guidelines and ensuring guidelines are met; overseeing peer review; developmental/line editing; hiring freelancers and reviewing their work; typesetting and/or compositing; assigning DOIs; completing and submitting indexing applications; and maintaining databases.

15% - Essential - Marketing/Publicity:
Assists in marketing and publicity. Duties include collaborating with authors and editors on marketing strategies; building/maintaining social-media presence; attending the occasional conference or exhibit; and presenting in webinars or giving other professional presentations about Clemson publications or publishing topics.

10% - Essential - Acquisition:
Assists in the acquisition of new publications and explores and develops new publishing initiatives, including partnerships and funding opportunities.

5% - Essential - Ex-Officio Member (Extension Journal):
Serves as an ex-officio member of the Extension Journal, Inc. board of directors, attending six bimonthly board meetings per year (virtual participation in four meetings and in-person attendance at the boards two annual face-to-face meetings). Assists the Director in drafting status reports for the board addressing information such as data for manuscripts at various stages in the publishing process, average turnaround times, updates on editorial operations and new initiatives, acceptance rate (based on a 5-year average), and feedback received.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Bachelor's Degree and experience related to the development and dissemination of information; Some experience in academic publishing.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Master's Degree in English, journalism, communications, or another relevant field; Work Exp 1+ years in academic publishing.

No Budget Responsibilities - No fiscal responsibility for the department's budget.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Master's Degree in English, journalism, communications, or another relevant field; Work Exp 1+ years in academic publishing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

5% - Overnight Travel

WORK SCHEDULE:

Standard Hrs: 37.5; Band: 05 ($ 33,494.00 - $ 40,000.00)
