Department Description:

The Office of University Communications is responsible for the strategic management of the University’s overall public relations and reputation management activities. The department provides leadership, counsel and services to over 200 communicators across campus and works with those communicators to ensure a unified campus-wide communications strategy. Areas within University Communications include: Executive Communications, Media Relations, Internal Communications, Content Development, Social Media, Strategic Resources, Issues Management, Community Relations, Public Records, the UNC-Chapel Hill Visitor’s Center, and UNC Creative.

Position Description:

Reporting to the Director of Media Relations, and working with colleagues in the Office of University Communications and communications professionals within the schools and units within the University, the Media Relations Manager will develop strategies to leverage the University’s work to position the University as a world-class research institution and will have the ability to communicate about these subjects in plain language to the media and across content platforms.

The Media Relations Manager will own a portfolio that covers areas such as the University’s finance and operations department, sustainability, admissions, financial aid and other issues and units as needed. The Media Relations Manager serves as an initial point of contact for representatives of the news media and develops and maintains relationships with journalists at media outlets to help ensure smooth communication of often complex issues to ensure the ability to engage the journalists with story ideas and expert recommendations. The Media Relations Manager maintains strong working relationships with subject matter experts across the campus, including, but not limited to, senior university leaders, department leads and communicators.

The Media Relations Manager will have a detailed working knowledge of issues and trends in the areas of higher education operations, admissions and sustainability as well as a general knowledge of University policy and operations. In addition to initiatives related to these areas, s/he is expected to provide support for other activities in the office of University Communications as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

The Media Relations Manager must have the ability to keep current with changing priorities and developments within the department and the University. Must have thorough knowledge of and hands-on experience in media relations and communication of complex issues. Strong written and oral communications skills are essential. The ability to handle difficult situations and those that fall outside established procedures and guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications:

Public relations and media relations experience working in large complex organizations or in organizations routinely dealing with research and challenging, visible public issues is preferred.

Experience pitching media content to best position your company / client. At least seven years’ experience in public relations and five of which should be in media relations.
