Director of Communications, Prisons and Justice Initiative - Georgetown College

Located in a historic neighborhood in the nation's capital, Georgetown offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, exciting ways to take advantage of Washington, D.C., and a commitment to social justice. Our community is a tight knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world.

Requirements

Georgetown University's Prisons and Justice Initiative was founded in 2016 in order to respond to the dual crisis of incarceration and recidivism. It brings together leading scholars, practitioners, and students to tackle the problem of mass incarceration—one of the most crucial moral and political issues of our time. Through public events, research seminars, and programs at local prisons/jails and for returning citizens in the Washington DC area, PJI works to better understand the causes and consequences of the mass incarceration crisis and to contribute to bipartisan solutions for effective reform.

The Director of Communications (CD) will assume overall responsibility for all PJI communications, ranging from content development to consistent messaging to strategic vision. The CD will work closely with the PJI leadership team to develop both content and larger communications strategies. The CD will collaborate with PJI-affiliated faculty and staff and program participants, both incarcerated people and returning citizens, to produce content (across multiple media) highlighting the work of PJI and the life stories and successes of program participants. The CD will also have primary responsibility for the development and maintenance of the PJI website, as well as the visual identity and brand(ing) of the program, both in keeping with larger University guidelines. The CD will collaborate with counterparts in the College and other schools and the University Office of Communications as appropriate, and will work to promote PJI widely and effectively, both within the Georgetown community and more broadly.

Reporting to the Director of Education, the Director of Communications will have management responsibility for PJI social media interns; the CD will also have management responsibility for additional communications specialists as the PJI communications team expands. The CD will collaborate with counterparts in College and University communications as necessary and appropriate, and will also regularly engage faculty across the College and the university to build and deepen relationships. • Engage affiliated faculty, program alumni, and networks of supporters to maintain and strengthen interest and participation in PJI programming.
  • Develop and employ analytics and assessment tools to evaluate the reach and effectiveness of PJI communications and adjust/improve strategies as necessary.

Content Development and Production:
  • Create dynamic news stories, features, and profiles, for publication on PJI website and wider distribution.
  • Engage faculty, program participants, and partners on campus and in the community to identify and develop stories.
  • Produce and edit video content; photograph as appropriate to supply visual component to print features.

Social Media, Web Content and Digital Communication:
  • Maintain and strengthen PJI presence across multiple social media platforms.
  • Review and analyze data across platforms; utilize performance metrics to formulate strategies and increase reach and impact.
  • Maintain and develop PJI website for maximum impact.
  • Develop strategies for targeted email communication (e.g., newsletters) to PJI networks and supporters.

Publications and Reporting; Events and Other Promotions
  • Produce PJI Annual Report, summarizing the activities of the previous year and highlighting accomplishments and successes for stakeholders and supporters.
  • Manage the promotion and publicity for frequent PJI events, to include lectures, panels and roundtables, et al. Assist with planning and execution of events.
  • Manage media placements for PJI team and affiliates around issues related to incarceration and advocacy for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people.
