Job Description Summary

The Executive Director will work closely with the faculty Co-Directors to develop a coherent strategic direction for the Mack Institute, and to foster the role the Institute serves as a key hub for innovative activities within the School, across the University, and for broader academic and industry communities worldwide. He/she will create and steward extensive relationships within the Wharton School with the Dean’s office, and with relevant contacts in other Schools and entities within the University. The Executive Director will also help develop and manage the Institute’s relationships with existing and prospective corporate partner companies domestically and globally, in order to expand the Institute’s reach to practice and raise funds for activities. In support of the Institute's role as a bridge between academia and industry, the Executive Director will be involved in organizing conferences and workshops, and will develop a highly effective communication strategy that disseminates the Institute’s research findings throughout Wharton, the University, and relevant audiences worldwide. He/she will be the regular liaison with the Institute’s founding donor, and will have day-to-day oversight of a well-functioning team of staff within the department.

Mission Statement
The Mack Institute for Innovation Management joins rigorous research with practical applications to help established firms navigate the risks and rewards of innovation.
We are the hub of a global learning network for scholars, business leaders, and students. Each year, we host several major conferences and workshops; fund student, PhD, and faculty research; and sponsor student initiatives relating to innovation and emerging technologies.
We emphasize multi-disciplinary, cross-functional perspectives. The leadership of the Mack Institute is comprised of three faculty directors and an executive director. Along with a diverse core team of accomplished Wharton faculty members, they collaborate with our senior fellows, who are high-level executives and academic leaders with expertise in innovation management.
Our activities are guided by research priorities we have jointly developed with our industry partners. These priorities reflect the strategic challenges of our partners and signal our reach and scope in the field of innovation management. They provide a blueprint for our research funding decisions and a basis for our industry-academic programs.

Qualifications

A minimum of a Master’s degree and 7-10 years of experience in the area of technology innovation is required or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in the area of academia. Ph.D. highly preferred.

  • Demonstrated interest and knowledge of current topics in the area of innovation and innovation management
  • Must be results driven and have a proven ability to develop and achieve long and short range goals
  • Must think strategically and be able to develop innovative solutions
  • Ability to oversee multi-phase projects from inception to completion while balancing concurrent priorities
  • Ability to articulate the Institute’s mission to a wide range of audiences
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to efficiently organize intellectual content of conferences and workshops
  • Excellent team building skills and ability to effectively develop and manage a cohesive team of staff
  • Ability to travel locally, regionally, and internationally
