JOB SUMMARY: This is a professional, full time position in the Office of Housing and Residence Life. Primary responsibility is for the provision of residence life programming and education that enhances the personal development of students, including a focus on personal responsibility, leadership skills, diversity awareness and civic responsibility with an emphasis on student learning outcomes and academic mindset. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the supervision of all learning communities and residence life staff.

MAJOR DUTIES:

• Work to build a sense of pride in the residence halls through planning, developing, and implementing (with assistance of residence hall staff) recreational, educational, and cultural programs for residential student communities.
• Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all residence life programming
• Assume primary responsibility for recruitment, selection, and training of Residence Life Staff
• Supervises off campus residence life sponsor events
• Coordinate monthly in-service training for staff
• Plan and implement residence life orientation for new residential students
• Coordinate and oversee Move-In Day for each residential campus community
• Supervise 8 professional full-time Residence Life Coordinators, 8 Community Assistants, and approximately 50 undergraduate Resident Assistants.
• Supervise and support the Residence Life duties related to all Living Learning Communities (LLCs) and Thematic Learning Communities (TLCs).
• Evaluate professional staff formally once a year and informally throughout the year.
• Provide guidance to staff in their professional development that is aligned with the departmental staff development philosophy
• Develop a working budget for the Residence Life Coordinators and the Resident Student Association
• Provide guidance to staff in their professional development that is aligned with the departmental staff development philosophy
• Coordinate fire drills and work with physical plant staff to ensure maintenance of safety and cleanliness in the residence halls
• Represent the university, at state, regional and national conferences as required
• Performs related duties

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Director of Housing & Residence Life assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the academic calendar, course catalogs, the employee handbook, and the student handbook and code of conduct. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application. This position develops department guidelines.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK: The work consists of varied management and supervisory duties. The purpose of this position is to direct residence life programming operations. Success in this position contributes to the delivery of efficient and effective residence life services to college students.

CONTACTS: Contacts are typically co-workers, other college employees, vendors, students, and members of the general public. Contacts are typically to provide services; to give or exchange information; to resolve problems; to motivate or influence persons; or to justify, defend or negotiate matters.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects. The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, or outdoors, occasionally in cold inclement weather.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: The position has direct supervision over residence life staff: Residence Life Coordinators (8); Community Assistants (8); Undergraduate Resident Assistants (50)

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a master’s degree in course of study related to the occupational field.
• Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to required three to five years of related experience.

COMPENSATION CLASSIFICATION:

• Position is exempt (monthly paid).
• Salary grade 19.
